In the midst of the standoff, Mia pushed the door open and walked in.

She drifted past me lightly and walked straight to Julian.

“Julian, I loved that restaurant you took me to tonight. Let’s go to the same one again tomorrow.”

The person we couldn’t reach was busy spending time with someone else.

I was already unsurprised by this. I had no emotion left.

But Grandma, hearing our words, began breathing faster and faster.

“So it’s a cat looking to steal fish and a third party trying to break up a relationship. And you still want to pin the blame on my child.”

Her hands were shaking with rage. “Do you have even the most basic sense of decency and proper upbringing?”

Mia looked as if someone had stomped on her foot.

She whipped around, her face changing completely. “What did you say, you old hag?”

Her hand shoved.

On the cold, gleaming floor, I could almost hear the sound of my grandmother’s bones hitting the surface.

Mia probably hadn’t expected the old woman to fall.

With a hint of guilt, she ran to Julian’s side and shook his hand.

“Julian, I didn’t do it on purpose.”

Their voices—I couldn’t hear any of them.

I could only hear my grandmother lying on the ground, groaning in pain.

I knelt beside her but didn’t dare touch her. My hands were shaking so badly I misdialed the hospital three or four times.

The ambulance from the nearby hospital came very fast.

Mia linked her arm through Julian’s, her eyes brimming with grievance.

“Julian, they were the ones who cursed at me first. Are we just going to let them walk away like that?”

Mia pressed herself tightly against him.

“There are still so many people watching.” She lowered her voice. “My friends are all still here too. Julian, am I just supposed to let myself be bullied for nothing?”

“Where would I put my face in front of my friends after this?”

“She’s your girlfriend. You have to give me some kind of resolution.”

Julian was silent for a few seconds. He looked at me.

“Stella, apologize to Mia.”

“Once you apologize, you can go.”

I lifted my face. My temples were throbbing. I ground my teeth.

“Get the hell out of my way.”

“Let the doctor in.”

Mia turned sideways. “What kind of attitude is that?!”

Julian pulled her behind him. The corner of his mouth curved up, but it held no warmth.

“Stella, I really thought you had turned over a new leaf.”

“If just an apology won’t do, then how about a bow and an apology?”

He settled Mia down beside him, his two long legs crossed. His eyes stared at me coldly.

“The moment you apologize is the moment I’ll have someone let the doctor in.”

“I have all the time in the world to wait you out.”

He tilted his head and glanced behind me.

“I just don’t know if your grandmother can afford to wait you out.”

For an instant, my mind went completely blank.

I fought with Julian. I quarreled with Julian. It was only to confirm that he still cared about me.

And the fact I hadn’t dared to admit—that he no longer loved me—settled into certainty in that moment.

I found it laughable.

The medical staff who had arrived were still blocked outside. Grandma’s whole face was scrunched up in pain.

I swallowed my tears and stood up from the floor.

I bent over at the waist.

Mia wasn’t satisfied. “Not sincere enough.”

I lowered myself a little further, bowing deeply toward her and Julian.

“I’m sorry.”

Tears crashed onto the floor.

What shattered along with them was the relationship Julian and I had shared since high school.

Thankfully, Grandma had always been fairly sturdy. She only had some minor fractures.

She hooked her hand around mine.

“I’m sorry, Stella. Grandma let you suffer such humiliation.”

“I just watched you in that video. You were nearly crying. Grandma felt so heartbroken.”

“Grandma knows how much you like him. I originally wanted to help you two work things out.”

I buried my face in my grandmother’s palm. My tears soaked the spaces between her fingers.
