I Fixed His Martyr Mom With My High Self-Worth Chapter 06

Mrs. Carter went into surgery that afternoon. Since she couldn’t walk afterward, Derek hired a

nurse.

All of it–paid for with her own money.

She was gutted. “Back in the trailer park, people broke their legs and still worked the fields. Nobody needed surgery for that.”

“That’s exactly my point, Mrs. Carter. Next time, just take the car. Don’t be stubborn. If you’d ridden with us, none of this would’ve happened. Right?”

She looked at me, clearly not wanting to admit it, but she had to. “You’re right. Should’ve just/

gotten in the car with you.”

I ordered her nutrient-packed meals and bone broth-good for the bones.

Day by day, the color returned to her cheeks.

A few days later, the doctors cleared her for discharge.

Derek bought her a smart wheelchair with a control panel on the armrest-super easy to use. With

her leg out of commission, she couldn’t manage daily stuff on her own, so I hired three helpers: one for cleaning, one for cooking, one for nursing.

Derek had hired help for her before, but she’d always run them off within weeks, insisting she didn’t need them and they were a waste of money.

This time? She couldn’t move. She had no choice but to accept it.

We were just sitting down to dinner when the doorbell rang. The maid opened it, and in walked

Derek’s uncle, aunt, and some young woman trailing behind them.

“Hey, sis! Heard you were in the hospital. You doing okay?”

The uncle slunk in, scanning every corner of the room with shifty eyes. He plopped down on the

couch and casually picked up a tin of tea. “Nice tea. You don’t drink it anyway-I’ll take it home.”

From how naturally he helped himself, I could tell this was a regular thing.

Mrs. Carter let him slide. I didn’t.

I whipped out my payment QR code and held it in front of him. “I bought that tea for your sister. Eight hundred eighty a tin. Cash or card?”

His face soured instantly. He pushed my hand away. “Sis, who’s this outsider? Running her mouth

in our house like she owns the place. No manners at all!”

I snorted. “Outsider? I’m marrying Derek. This house is my territory from now on. Derek! Tell them!”

One call and Derek scurried over, nodding like a puppy. “She’s right. My wife’s the boss of this

house. We all answer to her.”

“Sis, look at the nightmare your son’s bringing home!” the uncle spat, spit flying everywhere. “She’s walking all over her elders. If you don’t put her in her place, this family’s done for!”

“Exactly, sis!” the aunt chimed in, shoving the girl forward. “I told you, just set Emily up with

Derek. We’re family-we know each other. This woman’s a tyrant. Marry the wrong woman and you ruin three generations!”

Mrs. Carter kept her head down, silent.

Her brother and sister-in-law took that as approval. They started roaming the house, snatching up all the gifts I’d brought, plus the cashmere shawl and jade bracelet Derek bought his mom. They even raided the fridge for leftover cherries.

“You’re just a country woman,” the aunt said to Mrs. Carter. “You don’t deserve nice things like these. They’d be wasted on you. We’ll take them.”

“Oh, and where’s your bank card? There’s a promotion at the bank-hand it over, we’ll check it for

you.”

That was their real agenda all along. The card.
