I Fixed His Martyr Mom With My High Self-Worth Chapter 05

I’d switched seats with Derek earlier so he wouldn’t have to drive while he was still shaken up. I gripped the steering wheel and paused before speaking. “Pull yourself together first. This isn’t your fault.Even if you’d gone with her today and stopped her from falling, next week she’d be in the ER from eating sprouted potatoes from the pantry. Unless you plan to watch her twenty-four-seven, this was bound to happen again. And if you want to cancel? Fine. But you still owe me the money”

Derek chugged a bottle of water and cooled down a little. “You’re right. We’re not canceling. Let’s go see her.”

We got to the hospital. The nurse told us Mrs. Carter had fallen halfway up the hill and was rescued by a hiker who called an ambulance. She’d fractured her shin and needed surgery.

“You need to pay at the front desk. She’ll go in soon,” the nurse urged.

Derek instinctively pulled out his phone to pay, but I stopped him.

“It’s all my fault, Derek,” his mom whimpered. “Can’t even walk on flat ground. I don’t need surgery-I can just rest at home.”

“Absolutely not, Mom. Surgery will get you back on your feet faster. Don’t worry about it, just focus

on healing.”

I pulled Derek aside. “So every time something happens to your mom, you pay?”

“I’m her only son. Who else? You have no idea-she’s in and out of this place all the time from

eating bad food, or cutting herself on scrap metal. I’m practically a regular here.”

And there it was. The real problem.

This woman had it too easy. No matter what she did, her son bailed her out. She never faced any real consequences, so of course she kept at it.

Wish I had a son like that.

I snatched Derek’s phone and turned to his mom. “Mrs. Carter, where’s your bank card? Hand it over, I’ll pay your bill. Derek’s marrying me-his money’s going toward my jewelry and handbags. He sends you a generous allowance every month, right? Now’s the time to use it.”

She eyed me warily. “How much is this surgery going to cost?”

“No idea. All I know is if you’d gotten in the car this morning, it would’ve cost you zero.”

Grudgingly, she pulled out her card.

I dragged Derek to the payment desk. He sent her a huge sum every month, and she never spent

anything, so there should’ve been at least a hundred grand in there. But when we paid, the balance

came up as fifty-three dollars and twenty cents.

Derek, being a businessman, smelled something off immediately. He took the card to the bank

across the street to check the transaction history.

I went back to the ward and, with the nurse’s help, moved Mrs. Carter from the general ward to a

private suite.

“I was fine in that other room. This one’s expensive, isn’t it? Costs a fortune.”

“It’s decent. We were actually thinking of transferring you to a private hospital. Your son’s a big shot. If you stay in a regular ward, it makes him look bad. Even if you don’t care about yourself,

think about him.”

She might’ve been a martyr, but she loved her son. That shut her up fast.

“Well… fine. I guess this place is nice enough.”
