I Faked My Death to Escape the Mafia Don After My Daughter Died Chapter 05

It was January, cold enough for dripping water to freeze.

The top floor of the main building was bitterly cold.

Giovanna was locked in a dark little room.

Cold stone slabs sent chill through the soles of her feet, and stabbing pain drilled through her

knees.

Many years ago, she had defused the bomb on Vittorio and helped him escape an

abandoned warehouse.

When a burning beam snapped, she shielded him from it.

Her leg bone shattered and left permanent damage.

After they became a couple, Vittorio had once stroked her leg with heartache and promised

her word by word.

“From now on, I’ll protect you properly. I won’t let you suffer even a little.”

He was the one who made that promise.

He was also the one who locked her up.

For two whole days, no one brought food or water.

Giovanna’s face was terrifyingly pale.

Her lips were dry and cracked, and her knees were numb with pain, as if countless needles

had pierced them.

Just as she was about to collapse, Serena came to the top floor.

“Vittorio said you can get up.”

“Signora Padrona, I really should thank you. To protect us, you actually pushed everything onto your own daughter. If your daughter knew in heaven that she had such a kind mother,

she would be so comforted.”

Giovanna snapped fully awake.

“What?”

Serena wore a fake smile and tossed the phone to her.

Vittorio had used her account to post that statement.

The youngest and most brilliant bomb disposal expert in Sicily had countless followers.

But now, the people who had once admired and praised her were spewing vicious insults.

[Ansela Rizzuto, right? How could a child be that rotten? She almost got an innocent boy

killed.]

[Born evil. She deserved to die.]

[Not gonna lie, pretty little face. Would’ve been better if she died in my bed.]

The more Giovanna read, the uglier the comments became.

Her mind went blank.

Rage and pain almost tore her apart.

She stumbled out and crashed into Vittorio’s arms, both hands grabbing his collar hard.

“How dare you?”

How dare he do that to her daughter?

How dare he let a little girl who had died so young suffer this kind of abuse?

Vittorio frowned and tried to soften his tone.

“Public opinion is temporary. People will forget after a while.”

“Ansela is already gone, but Dario is still alive. We can’t let the living suffer this kind of pain.

Besides, if you hadn’t posted recklessly, things wouldn’t have turned out like this.”

It wasn’t her.

Giovanna had no energy to argue with him.

Madness flickered in her eyes.

“Vittorio Rizzuto, I told you. If you dare insult my daughter, I’ll die in front of you.”

Vittorio did not believe Giovanna would throw her own life away, but seeing her this

completely irrational still sent panic through him.

What if?

What if Giovanna really couldn’t bear it and chose to go to Ansela?

The thought of losing Giovanna made his whole body tremble.

His voice grew urgent.

“Don’t do anything stupid. I’ll hire the best PR team right now. No one will insult Ansela

again.”

Only then did Giovanna calm down.

Her voice was extremely hoarse.

“You’d better hurry.”

Vittorio thought she had given up on dying and let out a breath of relief.

Serena heard the commotion and walked out from the top floor.

At that moment, a crazed man rushed in.

“Serena Conti, you shameless bitch. You dared let my child call another man father. I’ll kill

you.”

Under the afternoon sun, the dagger in his hand flashed with cold light.

Serena screamed in terror.

Vittorio shuddered and threw himself toward Serena without thinking.

He hugged her and rolled twice across the floor.

Still shaken, he checked the woman in his arms from head to toe.

“Are you all right? Are you hurt?”

“I’m fine, but Signora Padrona..”

Vittorio realized something and turned back.

His pupils shrank

He had protected Serena, but exposed Giovanna behind him.

Giovanna, the calm, powerful woman who had once saved him from life and death, lay on the ground covered in blood.
