I Cancelled Our Wedding After Seeing His Call Log Chapter 06

David froze, staring at the message in disbelief.

Calling off the wedding?

Chloe?

How was that even possible?

They were just discussing wedding gown designs last night. In his mind, the legal registration and the ceremony were two separate steps, but he never imagined she would take a scalpel to the entire foundation.

Yet, his fingertips began to tremble uncontrollably as a sudden wave of panic and unease drove him to click on Chloe’s profile.

It was almost entirely barren.

Only a single pinned post remained at the very top of her feed.

[I would like to extend my sincere apologies to all our friends and family who have already received our wedding banquet invitations.

We have officially broken off our engagement, and the wedding is canceled.

I wish him all the best in his future endeavors.]

That was it.

David’s pupils dilated in sheer shock. He stared at those three short sentences for five full minutes, as if trying to burn a hole through the screen with his eyes.

Seeing his dramatic reaction, the students in the lecture hall exchanged bewildered glances.

“What’s wrong with the professor? Why does he look like he just saw a ghost? He looks completely devastated.”

“Who knows? Honestly, if it weren’t for the mandatory credits, I wouldn’t even step foot in his class. Such a total hypocrite, seriously…”

Before the whispers could finish, the youngest tenured professor in the literature department suddenly bolted out of the room right before everyone’s eyes.

He left behind a room full of completely stunned students.

The news of his sudden classroom desertion instantly set the campus forums ablaze once again.

As wild speculations began to fly, a student finally dropped a massive bombshell.

[Stop guessing. My elder sister is friends with Professor Harrison’s fiancé, and she officially announced the broken engagement on her feed early this morning.]

In an instant, public opinion erupted into utter chaos.

Meanwhile, David was sprinting at full speed, desperately dialing Chloe’s number over and over again.

But after three brief rings, every single attempt was met with the exact same cold, mechanical recording.

No matter how dense David usually was, he fully realized something was catastrophically wrong now.

He began frantically spamming her with text messages.

[What is the meaning of your social media post? Chloe, don’t you think you owe me an explanation?]

[What exactly is going on with you? Even if I did something wrong, you at least need to tell me!]

[I’m heading home right now. We need to have a real talk.]

The Maybach tore down the streets like a bullet.

Along the way, the cold sweat from David’s palms completely slicked the steering wheel, his heart rate spiraling further and further out of control.

The moment he burst through the front door of the apartment, his gaze locked onto the entryway console.

Chloe’s keys were resting right there on the counter.

His brain let out a loud, violent ringing sound.

He lunged into the bedroom.

“Chloe! Chloe, we need to…”

His voice died instantly in his throat.

The room was entirely empty.

And for the first time, David finally noticed the glaring abnormalities in the apartment—it had been thoroughly hollowed out.

His eyes scanned from the vanity, to the bathroom shelves, and straight into the walk-in closet.

The longer he looked, the deeper the shock in his chest grew.

Where were all of Chloe’s things?

Why wasn’t there a single trace of her items left behind?

David felt an overwhelming sense of bewilderment, completely unable to comprehend how things had deteriorated to this point so suddenly.

Right then, his phone rang violently. It was his mother, demanding that he return to the family estate immediately.

Wondering if Chloe might have gone there to seek counsel, David grabbed his keys and rushed right back out the door.

A short while later, the Maybach slammed to a violent halt in front of the estate. David’s usually immaculate hair was thoroughly disheveled.

He burst inside, his eyes scanning the room as his heart sank straight into his shoes.

“Mom, have you seen Chloe?”

Mrs. Harrison’s expression was incredibly dark.

“How dare you even bring up that classless woman! She has completely made a laughingstock out of the entire Harrison family!”

David’s eyes turned dangerously dark, experiencing a profound sense of shock for the very first time.

“Mom? Chloe is your future daughter-in-law, how can you speak about her so terribly?”

“Shouldn’t our absolute priority right now be finding her?”

Right then, Sarah stood up from the side, biting her lower lip with a fragile expression. “Maybe… Chloe is upset with me.”

David’s brows tightly knitted together.

Before he could speak, Mrs. Harrison directly grabbed Sarah’s hand and shoved her straight into David’s arms, issuing a stern command.

“This wedding cannot be canceled under any circumstances.”

“To silence the rumors and protect our reputation, David, you will marry Sarah instead.”

Sarah’s face instantly flushed with bashfulness and profound anticipation.

But David looked as if he had been struck by a bolt of lightning. His expression darkened to a terrifying degree.

“Mom, what on earth are you talking about! I only view Sarah as a younger sister!”

“The only woman I love is Chloe!”

The color drained from Sarah’s face instantly, while Mrs. Harrison stared at him in utter disbelief.

“You don’t love her?”

“Of course not!” David drew a sharp breath. “What kind of nonsense is this!

Being pushed aside, Sarah’s tears began to spill over rapidly.

“You don’t love me?”

She stared at him with watery eyes, looking completely shattered.

“If you don’t love me, why do you stay on the line with me every single night? Why did you tell me that I’m your exception?”

“If you don’t love me, why do you drink the things I hand to you? Why do you let me tie your ties?”

“Why did you panic so terribly the second you thought something might happen to me?”

“David, you love me. I know you do.”

David’s pupils contracted violently. He took a sharp step backward to distance himself from her, his tone dropping to an icy, severe register.

“I do not love you.”

“Any care I showed you was solely because you are my mother’s student. I was merely looking out for you out of professional courtesy.”

He scrutinized the girl standing before him—the same girl he had once considered entirely innocent—and found nothing but deep aversion.

“I will request the university administration to transfer you out of the literature department immediately. Furthermore, you should stop visiting this estate. I do not want anyone else harboring the same misconceptions.”

Leaving those words behind, he turned on his heel and walked out,
ignoring Sarah’s hysterical sobbing and his mother’s sharp, panicked
cries.

When he returned to the apartment, he didn’t bother turning on the
lights. A crushing silence and biting chill instantly engulfed him.

David sat alone on the sofa, staring unblinkingly at Chloe’s pinned
social media post in the dark.

He finally understood exactly why she had called off the wedding.

He wanted to find excuses to defend himself.

But the memories of the past began to crash over him like a violent
tidal wave. Was anything Sarah said factually incorrect? He couldn’t
find a single point to refute.

He truly had stayed on the phone with her through the night for all
those years.

Yet, when it came to Chloe, he had rigorously enforced a rule to never
pick up a single call after 9:00 PM.

The more he analyzed it, the greater the terror in David’s chest
became.

All the things he had willfully ignored for years were finally laid bare
on the table, utterly hideous and grotesque.

He took a ragged breath.

Recalling Chloe’s unnaturally calm, composed demeanor over the past few days, a sudden, suffocating agony gripped his heart tightly.

A moment later, a sudden realization struck him.

He snatched his keys, sprinted down to his car, and sped frantically toward the Hayes family residence.
