I Cancelled Our Wedding After Seeing His Call Log Chapter 05

Meanwhile, over at the faculty housing complex, David felt a sudden, sharp pang in his chest while keeping watch over Sarah.

Sarah quickly raised her head.

“David, what’s wrong? Are you feeling unwell? You look incredibly pale.”

David drew a deep breath.

After waiting a moment for the stabbing ache to recede, he dissolved a calming supplement in a glass of water and handed it to her.

“It’s nothing.”

He racked his brain but couldn’t pinpoint the source of his sudden anxiety, so he chose to dismiss it.

“I was probably just panicking too much when I heard you were in danger. Now that the adrenaline is fading, my heart is just racing a bit.”

Sarah’s ears flushed crimson.

Recalling the terrifying events of the night, a lingering dread still filled her chest.

“Thank you.”

“If it weren’t for you, tonight I might have…”

She paused, looking up at him. “Please don’t tell your mother. If she finds out, she won’t be able to sleep a wink out of worry.”

David offered a firm nod.

Seeing how she trembled on the bed, too terrified to close her eyes, he tightened his lips.

“Go to sleep. I’ll stay right here with you tonight. I won’t leave.”

A flash of smug satisfaction gleamed in Sarah’s eyes.

“Okay.”

She closed her eyes, her hand naturally reaching out to clasp his fingers, gripping them tightly.

David frowned slightly.

His instinctive reaction was to pull his hand away.

But seeing her fitful, terrified state even in sleep, he ultimately relented. It was fine—she was just a young girl, after all.

His mind suddenly drifted to Chloe.

He had rushed out so abruptly earlier; he wondered how she was doing back at the apartment.

Pulling out his phone, he fired off a quick text.

[Sarah is fine now. Don’t worry, go back to sleep.]

He waited for a moment.

Noticing that she didn’t reply instantly, leaving the chat entirely dead, David’s breathing turned slightly heavy.

But on second thought, it was incredibly late, so she was undoubtedly fast asleep. It was perfectly normal not to get a reply.

He tucked his phone away, gently extricated his fingers from Sarah’s tight grip, and moved to sit on the single armchair across the room.

The next morning.

The moment David stepped out of the faculty housing, he realized something was terribly amiss.

Every single colleague he ran into looked at him and Sarah with a highly bizarre expression.

Professor Miller from the mathematics department offered a deeply teasing smirk.

“Professor Harrison, congratulations! Marrying a stunning girl like Sarah and keeping it a total secret from us.”

“When’s the big day? Don’t forget to invite us for drinks!”

His wife, Professor Davis, offered a gentle laugh.

“You’re way too old to be clamoring for wedding drinks. Still, Professor Harrison is certainly a lucky man. Sarah is absolutely charming and sweet.”

David listened to the banter in total bewilderment, quickly cutting them off.

“Wait a moment. Sarah and I are not married, nor is she my fiancée. I am engaged to someone else.”

He pulled two elegant invitations from his bag and handed them over.

“My fiancé’s name is Chloe Hayes. Our wedding ceremony is next month, and you’re both more than welcome to attend.”

The academic couple exchanged a brief glance.

The celebratory atmosphere instantly died.

They stared at David with conflicted, skeptical expressions.

“So it’s not Sarah? Then the way you two usually behave…”

Professor Davis gave her husband a sharp tug, offering a distinctly strained, awkward smile.

“Right, right. Congratulations to you both, then.”

With that, they hurriedly walked away.

Yet, David could still distinctly catch their whispered scoffs from a short distance away. “What a hypocrite. He has a fiancé but still spends the entire night in Sarah’s housing unit…”

The man knitted his brows, a wave of discomfort washing over his chest.

He merely viewed Sarah as a younger sister. Taking care of her during an emergency shouldn’t be scrutinized like this, right?

But as he continued walking through the campus, more and more people kept coming up to congratulate him and Sarah on a lifetime of happiness.

By the time his students started jeering and catcalling during his lecture, David finally lost his composure. His expression turned incredibly severe and frigid, every ounce of his usual gentle demeanor completely vanishing.

“Let me address something. There have been numerous groundless rumors circulating regarding myself and Sarah recently.”

“I expect a wise person to see through these fabrications. Sarah is my mother’s student, and she is practically a younger sister to me. I have a fiancé, and our wedding ceremony will take place in a month.”

The previously rowdy classroom fell into an instant, dead silence. The students stared at each other in utter shock.

One bold student in the front row immediately raised a hand to question him.

“Professor Harrison, if Sarah isn’t your girlfriend, then why are your interactions always so incredibly intimate?”

David’s brows tightly knitted together, seemingly incapable of understanding why anyone would even formulate such a question.

“Intimate?”

“I don’t believe we are. I am engaged, and my care for Sarah is merely fulfilling a promise to my mother.”

Several female students at the back let out audible scoffs.

Finally, a few bold students who didn’t belong to the literature department spoke up directly.

“But Professor Harrison, when the campus forums were flooded with posts shipping the two of you, you never once stepped forward to clarify anything.”

“And everyone on campus can see that your treatment of Sarah is entirely unique.”

“A younger sister? Would a sister publicly tie your tie in front of everyone, or feed you breakfast?”

A chorus of snickers erupted across the lecture hall.

Several students subtly flashed a thumbs-up to the girl who spoke out.

David’s face turned thoroughly ash-white.

In his mind, none of those actions crossed any inappropriate lines; they were simply a protective older brother indulging a younger sibling.

But why on earth were these students interpreting it this way?

David’s breathing turned incredibly heavy, his dark, ominous expression causing the students to gradually fall silent, not daring to push any further.

Throughout the remainder of the lecture, rage swirled violently in David’s chest.

He wanted nothing more than for the class to end immediately.

The way his students looked at him was deeply unsettling—as if they were staring at a cheating man, even though he hadn’t done a single thing wrong.

Cheating…

David pressed his lips into a hard line, harboring nothing but utter disdain for such behavior.

Still, someone as sensible and understanding as Chloe would surely never misunderstand the situation.

Comforting himself with that thought, David noticed his phone vibrating aggressively on the podium.

He picked it up, only to find over a dozen frantic, back-to-back texts from his mother.

[David, have you seen Chloe’s social media status? What happened between you two? Why did she call off the wedding?]
