I Cancelled Our Wedding After Seeing His Call Log Chapter 07

I Cancelled Our Wedding After Seeing His Call Log Chapter 07

Spring shifted into autumn, and another full cycle of seasons passed me by.

Time, to me, became nothing more than the simple rising and setting of the sun, the natural shifting of the tides.

In the blink of an eye, a year and a half had flown by.

My career and daily life at the embassy in France had settled into a perfect, fluid routine.

I knew nothing of what was happening back home.

Every single individual associated with the Harrison family had been permanently scrubbed from my contacts.

I never expected to cross paths with David again—truthfully, I never wanted to.

Yet, fate clearly harbored its own cruel sense of humor.

Walking home from work one evening, I spotted a distinctly haggard, desolate silhouette standing beneath the dim amber glow of a streetlamp from a distance.

My footsteps immediately halted. As David caught sight of me, an overwhelming surge of turbulent emotions flooded his eyes—emotions I cared little to decipher.

I turned to walk away.

But he lunged forward with sudden desperation, instantly pulling me into a warm, trembling embrace.

“I’m so sorry…”

Hearing those words escape his lips actually brought a flicker of surprise to my mind.

I had fully assumed he traveled all this way to hurl accusations at me, but he had come solely to offer an apology.

Still, I simply pushed him away with a gentle, firm hand.

“I heard you.”

With that, I turned to walk past him.

As our shoulders brushed, David frantically grabbed my wrist, his eyes visibly shaking as he stared at me.

“Chloe, I have been searching for you for an entire year.”

He offered a bitter, self-deprecating laugh.

“I went to your old office, but they claimed your location was classified information. Then I went to see your parents, and they literally chased me off their porch with a broom.”

“But I had no choice. I resorted to camping out in their building’s hallway for months, because they were the only ones who knew your whereabouts.”

David stared deep into my eyes, his voice thick with raw emotion.

“When you walked away, I was entirely blindsided. I couldn’t comprehend why you suddenly chose to call off the wedding.”

Hearing this, my frame stiffened imperceptibly.

I listened as he continued desperately.

“But I completely understand now. It was because I lacked any sense of boundaries. My care for Sarah had completely crossed the line of what was appropriate between a mentor and a student.”

“But Chloe, I beg you to believe me. I have never once harbored any inappropriate feelings toward Sarah, nor have I ever engaged in any form of physical infidelity. The only woman I love, the only wife I want, is you.”

I listened to his impassioned speech in total silence.

Truthfully, I didn’t know what kind of reaction I was supposed to have; I merely felt an anchor-heavy sense of exhaustion.

“Are you finished speaking?”

His entire body locked up in shock. I smoothly wrenched my wrist from his grasp. “If you’re finished, then leave. Stop coming to find me.”

David stood rooted to the spot as if paralyzed.

He desperately wanted to chase after her, to pull Chloe back into his arms.

But the moment he resolved to move, the absolute disgust and cold detachment reflecting in her eyes violently forced him back.

Right then, heavy flurries of snow began to drift down from the winter sky.

David remained perfectly motionless amidst the falling snow. His heart felt infinitely colder than his physical surroundings, consumed by a freezing, paralyzed terror.

A deep, visceral intuition whispered to him that she would never offer him forgiveness.

Returning to my apartment, I looked out the floor-to-ceiling window to find the man still standing frozen in the snowy courtyard below.

In reality, I believed his words.

I fully believed that he and Sarah had never crossed the line into physical intimacy.

However, the midnight phone calls, the shared breakfast, the front passenger seat, and the blatant favoritism shown by the Harrison family—those details were all entirely real.

Was it a catastrophic error?

Was it severe enough to warrant a lifetime of total estrangement between us?

Objectively speaking, perhaps not.

But was it trivial enough to overlook? Could we ever rebuild a relationship on top of it?

The answer forming in my mind was instantaneous and absolute.

No.

It was precisely these seemingly trivial matters, these supposedly harmless indiscretions, that acted like a million fine needles, slowly puncturing my heart over time.

They left me in a position where I couldn’t even justify throwing a tantrum without looking unreasonable.

It was a classic case of a frog in warming water.

These minor details had slowly eroded my affection until my heart was entirely dead, yet I wasn’t even allowed to vocalize the pain.

I couldn’t move past it.

At the very least, I knew I could never offer him forgiveness in this lifetime.

Reaching out, I firmly pulled the curtains shut, blocking out the sight of the man standing below. If he wished to stand in the freezing snow, let him. It would be for the best if he froze to death.

In the middle of the night, however, the frantic ringing of my phone abruptly jolted me awake.

“Hello?”

The background on the other end was incredibly chaotic. “Hello, is this a relative of David Harrison? He just collapsed on the street. Please come to the hospital immediately.”
