I Believed His Noble Excuse For IVF, Only To Uncover His Secret Affair Chapter 06

“Ruby!”

Nothing else existed for Julian. He ran over and lifted her, and he never noticed that he had shoved me hard enough to nearly put me on the floor.

His voice was close to shaking. “Don’t be scared. I’m taking you to the hospital.”

He carried her out and looked back at me. “Elena, this is somebody’s life. Give me a hand.”

“Don’t, don’t trouble her.” Ruby tugged weakly at his sleeve. “We can go by ourselves.”

I hadn’t planned on going, and that line made me curious.

A woman who had been demanding I nurse her through her recovery an hour earlier was worried about

troubling me.

There was something under that, and anybody could see it.

I picked up my car keys. “Let’s go.”

Ruby tried to refuse again, and Julian was too frantic to hear any of it.

At the hospital, the doctor ran through everything and found nothing wrong.

Ruby kept insisting her stomach hurt.

The doctor frowned, glanced at Julian, and let out a breath so small it almost wasn’t there. “It may be emotional. If a pregnant woman is very tense or very worked up, the uterus contracts, and if she’s sensitive she’ll feel it as abdominal pain. As long as she stays calm, it won’t affect the baby.”

Whatever the doctor had filled in for himself, he added it kindly. “She has PCOS. She was on treatment for over a year and only conceived with fertility drugs, so the first three months need more care than usual.”

Then he picked up her chart and left the room.

Julian had no blood in his face. “Lena…”

“Yes? What did you want to say?”

My tone was even, as if I were asking him what he wanted for dinner.

What the doctor said hadn’t surprised me.

Julian had decided on IVF on our wedding night and announced a successful transfer two days later, and

even somebody who knew nothing about medicine wouldn’t have believed that.

So there was only one possibility. Ruby had already been pregnant, and whether it came from IVF or fertility

drugs didn’t matter.

Julian was quiet for a moment. “The doctor said her body wasn’t suited to IVF, so we… but don’t worry. Apart

from the baby, there’s nothing between her and me.”

Something ugly moved behind Ruby’s eyes in that bed, and what came out sounded wounded. “We only wanted to give my mother what she wanted. Jules did this out of sympathy.”

“But,” and her face brightened all at once, “if you don’t want him, I’d be very happy to be the backup.”

I made a couple of noncommittal sounds.

That fired her up. “Elena, you have no idea how happy Jules was the day the test came back. He can’t wait for this baby. He’s going to be such a good father!”

“Ruby!” Julian shut her down. “If you’re not feeling well, rest. I’m taking Lena home.”

He followed me out over Ruby’s protests.

Two nurses were talking outside the door.

“Oh my god, did you hear? The PCOS pregnancy in bed thirty six is somebody’s mistress.”

“That explains it. I heard her telling her mom something about using the baby to move up, and she had her mother fake being sick.”

“I saw the actual wife a minute ago. That man has terrible taste. The wife is beautiful and she looks smart. Why would he want a two faced girl like that?”

“Maybe that’s what he likes. When she was doing the PCOS treatment, he was there with her every single

day.”

Julian was furious. “Who told you it was all right to discuss a patient’s private business? What are your badge numbers? I’m filing a complaint!”

The nurses went tense, and I spoke up. “Leave them alone.”

Then I walked straight out of the hospital, and he hurried after me.

He caught my arm as I was getting into the car and tried it carefully. “Lena, drop the suit. Let’s not get divorced. Please?”

I pulled my arm free. “Julian, go home and actually read the summons.”

If he had read it, he wouldn’t have asked.

Because I wasn’t only divorcing him. I was sending him to prison.
