I Believed His Noble Excuse For IVF, Only To Uncover His Secret Affair Chapter 05

Julian looked lost. “There’s been a mistake. I got married a few days ago. How would I have a divorce summons?”

His face turned annoyed. “Look, I don’t care if you’re on official business. You don’t come to a man’s door and pull a joke like this.”

“Last four of your Social is 1256. Is that correct?”

Julian nodded before he thought about it. “That’s right, but…”

The server held out a pen and pushed the papers at him. “Then there’s no mistake. Sign, please. Let’s not make this difficult.”

Something landed on him, and he turned and looked back at me like he couldn’t believe it, then signed with a shaking hand.

“You did this?”

He shut the door and walked straight over to me. “Why?”

There was something honestly grieved in his voice.

But I didn’t want him anymore, so why would his feelings matter to me?

I answered without any weight. “I did. And you don’t know why?”

Nobody is stupid enough to accept a spouse having a child with somebody else during a marriage.

I wasn’t either.

Before Julian could speak, Kath opened fire on me. “Elena, this is too far!”

“Julian and Ruby did the IVF to give me what I wanted. If you’re angry, be angry at me. Don’t take it out on them!”

Ruby put on a hurt, miserable face. “It’s my fault, Elena. This is on me!”

“Don’t divorce the baby’s dad, I mean Julian. Don’t divorce him. I never meant to break up your family. I only wanted a baby to make my mother happy.”

She rushed over to grab my hand, and I frowned and moved away from her.

Ruby froze, at a loss. “I… I could terminate it.”

Then she dropped into a crouch, sobbing so hard she couldn’t speak, with her head buried between her knees.

That went straight through Julian. He pulled her up and held her. “Don’t be stupid. What are you saying?”

He wiped her tears with his thumb. “It took everything to get this baby. How could we end it?”

She had crouched down hard enough that the necklace at her throat had slipped free.

It was a blue mermaid’s tear.

The story went that a merman prince fell in love with a mortal princess and endured his tail splitting into legs for her, and the tears he shed became the stone, which stood for a love that never quit.

I had one exactly like it around my own neck.

Julian had given it to me when he proposed, along with a promise that it would never change.

It was almost funny.

I found the chain, pulled once, and it snapped.

In front of him, I dropped it in the trash and turned to go to my room.

Julian panicked. He got in front of me and reached to hold me out of habit.

He met my eyes and put his hands down. “Lena, let me explain. It isn’t what you think. I asked Ruby’s opinion and then bought that one for you. Hers is one she bought herself.”

He shot Ruby a look, and she said it low, like it cost her everything. “I bought mine myself.”

I made a small sound of acknowledgment.

“I believe you. And even if you had bought it for her, it wouldn’t matter.”

I had already thrown away the man himself, so what was a necklace?

The truth was simpler. That necklace didn’t belong on my neck because it made me sick.

To be exact, everything Julian had ever given me turned my stomach.

I looked around at the place. It was lucky that he had checked out during the renovation, because I had handled it all myself, from finding the contractor to the work to the furniture.

Every time I asked what he thought, he waved me off. “I’m busy. You decide.”

Not one dollar of his had gone into this house, and not one hour of his thought, so at least I wouldn’t have to gut it.

I found myself half believing in fate, as if something had arranged the divorce a long time ago, and that was why he had never put an ounce of himself into this place.

Julian felt the shift in me and didn’t dare stay on the subject. He forced a smile. “Lena, ten years. You have to believe me. You’re the one I’ve always loved most.”

The words were barely out when Kath’s voice went up in alarm. “Julian! Quick! Look at Ruby!”

“Ruby, what’s wrong? Don’t scare me!”

Ruby was on the floor with no color in her face, holding her stomach and moaning. “It hurts. Jules, the baby says it hurts.”
