I Believed His Noble Excuse For IVF, Only To Uncover His Secret Affair Chapter 07

I didn’t go home. I bought a few outfits at the mall and checked into a hotel.

My lawyer told me the evidence was strong and that if I refused mediation, Julian was likely looking at two

years.

She asked whether I had considered settling.

I turned it down flat.

People paid for what they did, and the law was the floor under what that cost.

A few hours later, unable to find me, Julian came apart.

He called and found himself blocked.

He sent me a WhatsApp message, but it stayed stuck on a single gray check mark, never showing as

delivered.

He tried to reach me through my friends and found that he didn’t have a single one of their numbers.

It wasn’t as if I had never brought him around them over the years.

But every time, he sat with his head down on his phone.

“I’m a known professor now. Spending time with your assorted friends only drags me down.”

After that, he stopped coming to those get-togethers at all.

So, of course, he didn’t have their numbers.

He started calling me from new numbers, and every time I recognized him, I blocked him.

After nine of them, he stopped trying with electronics and settled for waiting outside my office.

That morning, I overslept.

I had barely stepped through the door when somebody caught my wrist.

“Lena, I’ve been waiting days. Have you been avoiding me?”

It had been a few days, and Julian was unshaven and worn out, with nothing left of the celebrated young professor.

People kept walking past fast and looking back anyway, because gossip is what people are.

I took the morning off and pointed Julian toward the little coffee shop down the block.

“Two lattes, please.”

Julian pulled out his phone to pay, and the owner turned to me, surprised. “What, did you switch””

I shook my head. “The usual for me.”

Julian frowned and paid, and once we sat down, he asked, honestly confused. “Lena, what did he mean? Latte is your favorite. What does switch mean?”

The coffee came fast, and I picked up my black coffee and took a sip.

It was rich and a little bitter, and it stayed with me.

I smiled and didn’t answer.

The only thing I had ever liked was black coffee.

The one who loved lattes had never been me. It had been him.

The first time we went to a coffee shop together, I ordered a black coffee, and Julian tried it and made a face. “They say people who drink it black are cold blooded. You’re not secretly heartless, are you?”

Because of one sentence, I drank nothing but lattes in front of him after that.

I changed myself into what he had imagined, and I wore it like a costume.

And it turned out that bending to somebody without limit produced the opposite of what a person hoped for

When he saw I wasn’t going to answer, Julian let it go. “Lena, if I have Ruby terminate it, will you drop the suit and start over with me?”

I drank my coffee slowly, and he didn’t dare rush me. He watched me with his eyes burning, full of hope.

“No.”

I set the cup down, picked up my bag, and stood, looking down at him.

From that angle, the bridge of his nose sat a little flat, and his lips were thin, and there was none of the bright, good-looking boy I had fallen for.

“I came here to make one thing clear.”

“The divorce is happening, and starting over is out of the question.”

“Julian, did you think I’d never find out that the bullying I went through in high school was your doing?”
