I almost laughed.

He was the one who had cheated, and then he had pushed further and asked me to pay for his mistake, and now he was throwing the dirt on me.

It was ridiculous.

“Then let’s get divorced.”

The second it was out, the room went quiet enough to hear a pin drop.

Kath stopped coughing, and Ruby’s head snapped up with something delighted she couldn’t hide.

Julian’s face went through several things, from anger to shock, and then a clear flash of panic.

A moment later, he got up and came toward me, raising his hand to settle me down the way he always used to.

I frowned, and he put his hand down awkwardly and started explaining, nervously. “I didn’t mean it like that.”

I cut him off. “It’s fine.”

He stopped, and then he checked. “Really?”

I nodded calmly. “Really.”

There was no reason for him to explain so anxiously.

Once, I would have been furious or heartbroken about it. Now I didn’t care.

He could cheat, and he could have a child with somebody else, and none of it mattered to me.

The two of us were done.

Julian let out a breath, and then his face turned accusing. “Don’t throw the word divorce around. Say it enough times and it does real damage.”

I nodded again, lightly.

I only ever got a chance once.

Julian hadn’t taken it, so what was waiting for him was a lawsuit.

And when it came, he wasn’t getting out of prison time or The sight hit me hard, and I turned around and walked away. with anything.

“All right. Ruby’s pregnant and Mrs. Colemanis improving, so these are good things.”

Julian helped Ruby settle onto the couch and found a pillow to put behind her back.

“Weren’t you going to have the hometown reception? I’m free tomorrow, so let’s go tomorrow.”

“She’s carrying Julian’s baby, so we’re family now, and family goes to something as important as that.”

Julian and Ruby exchanged a soft look. “Elena, go ahead and set it up. Having Mrs. Coleman and Ruby there will help fill the room out for you.”

The whole thing struck me as unreal.

It was as if a few hundred years had rolled backward and we were living under some old order.

Julian could keep a wife and a mistress without a second thought, while Ruby and Kath lowered themselves to get into this family and rushed to please him for it.

“There’s no need.”

I pulled my mouth into something like a smile. “The reception is over.”

Julian went white. “It’s over?”

He came forward and grabbed my wrist. “Didn’t I tell you to push it back?”

I pulled free, and it came out sharp. “Push it back? Do you think you’re somebody’s boss? Whatever you say goes?”

“That date was set a long time ago and every relative and friend was coming. You say push it back and the whole world rearranges itself for you?”

Kath couldn’t help cutting in. “That kind of outdated custom should have been thrown out years ago. He asked you to move it back. What’s the harm?”

“And Julian was going in for IVF. He was creating a life. Next to a human life, some backward little tradition can be skipped.”

“Elena, after all these years, did the dog get everything I taught you?”

Ruby chimed in too. “Right, Elena. You’re being unreasonable. Are you doing this to embarrass Julian on purpose?”

My face didn’t move, and nothing in me moved either.

A backward tradition? A new life?

The two of them could turn black into white.

They called a traditional family celebration a backward custom and dressed up cheating as creating a life.

Julian sighed.

He was about to say something when the doorbell rang.

A process server was standing outside.

“Julian Shaw, you’ve been served with a divorce summons. Please sign for it.”
