His Son, Her Photo, My Turn Chapter 11

Jonathan didn’t reach for the document, instead raising a deadly, piercing gaze to the attorney The Lawyer felt a cold sweat break out across his neck under the intense pressure

“If you don’t require anything else, Mr. James, I will take my leave.”

“Where did you get this garbage?” Jonathan snarled, ripping the certificate in half and hurling the pieces at the lawyer’s chest. “You actually had the nerve to forge a government document to trick me? Who the hell do you think you’re dealing with?”

The lawyer nearly dropped to his knees in terror. “Mr. James, I wouldn’t dream of deceiving you! This decree is completely authentic. It was processed through City Hall based on the signed marital dissolution agreement Miss Vance provided. If you doubt me, you can check the public records yourself, or ask Miss Vance directly!”

Jonathan sneered. “I never signed a single paper-‘

The words died in his throat as a memory flashed through his mind. He remembered a chaotic, rainy midnight a few weeks back when thunder was shaking the windows. Lily had called him weeping, saying Silas was terrified of the storm and crying uncontrollably.

As he had rushed out of bed to leave, Valerie had suddenly blocked his path, insisting he sign a stack of urgent documents. The lighting had been dim, and in his frantic haste to leave, he hadn’t scrutinized a single line.

It had been a divorce petition. She had orchestrated this right after waking up, meaning she had intended to leave him from the very beginning.

But why? Just because of his affair? Because he found comfort in a stand-in while she was comatose? When she first discovered the truth, she had smiled and told him it was fine!

If she didn’t care, why did she secretly divorce him behind his back? Why did she deceive him?

The dormant fury in his chest exploded completely. Jonathan lunged forward, grabbing the lawyer violently by the collar. “Tell me where she is right now!”

“I… I don’t know, Mr. James! Please calm down!” the lawyer stammered wildly. “I haven’t seen Miss Vance since we parted ways at City Hall yesterday morning.”

“However,” the lawyer squeaked, “I believe she might be occupied… preparing for her wedding.”

“Are you saying Valerie actually married someone else? The second she obtained the divorce decree, she immediately filed a license with another man?”

“Yes,” the lawyer nodded. “Mr. James, did you really have no idea?”,

How could he have known? He didn’t even know his own marriage had been legally dissolved, let alone that she was marrying someone else!

Just as he was on the verge of a complete breakdown, his assistant rushed into the living room

“Sir, the investigation regarding the hound facility is complete.”

bolted

“Speak.” Jonathan released the lawyer’s collar with a rough shove. The terrified attorney bolted from the house without looking back.

The assistant hesitated before delivering the news. “It was Miss Foster’s doing.”

“Lily?” Jonathan’s hands tightened into white-knuckled fists. “How could she-”

“Miss Foster privately approached your bodyguards and paid them ten thousand dollars each. She instructed them to lock the main gates just as the mistress and Miss Shaw thought they were

escaping.”

“Though, I believe Miss Foster merely intended to frighten them. She likely didn’t anticipate Miss Shaw would lose an arm protecting the mistress…”

By the time the assistant finished speaking, Jonathan’s face had gone completely pale. “Summer actually lost her arm?”

“Yes, sir. The mistress called a cab to rush Miss Shaw to the hospital herself. They fought for nine hours in the operating room just to save her life. But the arm was too badly mangled to be saved.”

“Bring Lily to me right now.”

“She’s already outside, sir,” the assistant noted quietly. “Miss Foster has been standing by the entrance for a long time, too terrified to come in. She’s holding a slice of cake, presumably to offer

to you.”
