His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 19

Isabelle’s mother was still complaining, her voice sharp and chaotic. But Caleb could no longer hear a single word.

A buzzing filled his ears, and the glowing forum page on the screen before him began to blur.

Only one sentence remained, repeating over and over in his mind.

*She withdrew.*

*She went to live an ordinary civilian life.*

But why?

Hadn’t she always wanted to prove herself at West Point, to wash away the stain of her family’s scandal? Shouldn’t she have fought desperately to stay, to claim the honor she had always wanted?

Shouldn’t that uniform have meant everything to her?

How could she just… take it off?

Caleb abruptly stood and strode toward the door.

“Where are you going, Caleb?” Isabelle’s mother hurried after him. “We haven’t finished talking. Isabelle—”

He shook her hand off.

At that moment, Caleb couldn’t hear anything but the roaring in his own head.

As if possessed, he yanked open the front door. The reporters waiting outside immediately swarmed him, flashes and microphones nearly pressed against his face.

“Cadet Sterling, what’s your comment on Elara Vance withdrawing from West Point?”

“Are the online reports true? Did you and Isabelle Davenport frame her?”

He didn’t seem to hear them. He just pushed people aside, one after another, rushed down the steps, and threw himself into his car.

The engine roared to life, and the car sped straight toward West Point.
