His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 18

“A disgrace?” Caleb repeated softly. The word pierced his nerves.

Isabelle’s mother didn’t notice his reaction. She was still consumed by her own fury, her fingers digging into the arm of the sofa.

“Did you read that withdrawal statement, Caleb? It was as cold as an official report. ‘Due to personal choice, I voluntarily renounce my West Point enrollment and begin a new civilian life.’ Civilian life! She’s humiliating all of us!”

General Davenport’s face was equally grim. He picked up a crystal glass from the table, then set it down with a heavy thud.

“When I received the copy of that statement, I smashed a glass on the spot.” He turned to Caleb, his gaze sharp. “I always thought that you and Isabelle, our two families…”

He didn’t finish, but the meaning was clear. It had been a tacitly approved arrangement, a union that would have consolidated both their families’ power. Now, it had all devolved into a scandal.

“And there’s more,” the general said, his voice low with irritation. “Anonymous exposés are popping up all over the internet.”

He tossed his phone onto the table. The screen was lit up, showing a military forum.

“Someone claiming to be her instructor posted that the reason Elara hid her abilities was because she was constantly targeted after her father’s dismissal. That someone even deliberately reported her to sabotage her future… Now the media is camped outside my house. People are blocking the entrance to my office at the Pentagon.”
