His Smokescreen Is Now the Woman He Can’t Have Chapter 17

Isabelle’s mother’s sobs stopped instantly. General Davenport, standing nearby, also froze and looked at Caleb in confusion.

“See Elara?” General Davenport frowned. “But… she left the day before yesterday.”

Caleb’s entire body went rigid.

He seemed not to understand. “What did you say? Where did she go?”

“She left right after completing her withdrawal procedures,” General Davenport said, his tone full of disbelief. “Flew to the East Coast to attend some civilian university.”

East Coast? Civilian university?

The thread Caleb had been clinging to seemed to snap. He instinctively took a step forward, his voice carrying an obvious tremor for the first time.

“Is it a leave of absence? Or… a transfer?”

“It was a complete withdrawal!” Isabelle’s mother shrieked, as if she had finally found a new target for her rage. “That girl dragged both our families’ reputations through the mud, then just walked away! She left the academy nothing but a cold withdrawal statement!”

General Davenport also shook his head, his expression dark with a soldier’s distaste for someone who had “left the system.”

“She’s an adult now. A former West Point cadet, walking away from the service to live an ordinary civilian life. It’s a disgrace to her family name.”
