His Promise Failed When I Found Out Who He Was Sleeping With Chapter 06

“I’m sorry… I’m so sorry, Vivian…”

Her hands shook as she dialed my number.

The emergency contact. The one who always picked up on the first ring.

But it just rang and rang.

She collapsed on the floor, dialing over and over.

“Please. Please pick up.”

“I messed up. I really messed up…”

Amanda couldn’t breathe.

The door opened. Derek walked in.

He knew immediately. Panic crept into his voice.

“She’s not answering?”

Amanda nodded. Grabbed his hand.

“What if she… what if she does something to herself?”

“What if she hurts herself again?”

“Derek, we never should have—”

Her voice broke.

Derek’s blood ran cold. He couldn’t stop thinking about me destroying that apartment. About the knife in my hand.

“I’ll find her.”

Fear crept up his spine.

He was scared, too. Scared that if he didn’t do something soon, it’d be too late.

He drove like a maniac. Ran three red lights.

Standing at my door, he couldn’t bring himself to open it.

He was terrified of what he’d find. Blood. My body on the floor.

But he was wrong.

When he finally pushed the door open, the place was cold.

Same apartment. Same furniture.

The couple mugs. The matching sweaters. All still there.

But I was gone.

Nothing was left. Just emptiness.

“Vivian?”

He knew no one would answer. He said it anyway.

Silence.

His legs gave out. He almost hit the floor.

He drove all over the city. Searched everywhere.

The spot under the cherry blossoms where we fell in love.

The coffee shop where we had our first date.

The beach where he’d proposed.

Turned over every possible corner.

He showed strangers my picture. Asked if anyone had seen me.

No one had.

It was like I’d vanished.

He went back to Amanda’s place, empty-handed.

She grabbed his arm, hope flickering in her eyes.

Derek opened his mouth. Nothing came out.

What was he supposed to say? That he’d looked everywhere and found nothing?

That he regretted it? That one mistake cost him everything?

He couldn’t say it. Just let the guilt eat him alive.

“Dad… what’s wrong?”

Leo didn’t understand. Didn’t know why everyone looked so heavy.

Didn’t know why his dad, who read him stories every night, was looking at him with such disgust.

He grabbed Derek’s hand. Derek yanked it away.

“Get away from me.”

“She was right. You shouldn’t have been born. You’re a mistake.”

Derek had lost it. He blamed Leo for everything.

He thought about the eight years I’d wasted on him.

All those nights I called him crying, begging him to come home.

He used to not care. Thought he could have both.

Now he knew. He was wrong.

He wanted to go back. To come home to me.

But there was no going back.
