I cried, drowning in guilt. She just held me gently. No regrets.

Everyone urged Amanda to answer the phone.

That familiar voice came through, carrying an urgency he’d never once shown me.

“Baby, what’s wrong?”

“Why’d you hang up like that? Where are you? I’m coming to get you.”

No one made excuses for her anymore.

Pitying looks fell on me like bricks. I couldn’t breathe.

I ran outside and doubled over, retching against the wall.

He just sent money. Like that made up for anything.
