Amanda pushed Derek’s hand away and walked to me.

“Vivian, let me explain.”

“Explain what?” My voice dripped with sarcasm, but my eyes were full of tears.

“Explain that the husband you’ve been hiding for three years isn’t him?”

“Or that the kid you carried for nine months isn’t his?”

She couldn’t answer. That’s when I knew.

Why she never let us meet.

Why she always had that strange look in her eyes when we talked about her husband.

“I’m the one who messed up. If you’re angry, take it out on me!”

Derek pulled her behind him, blocking her.

His eyes were cold. Foreign.

“She didn’t do anything wrong. Don’t hurt her.”

Eight years together. This was the first time he’d ever defended someone else against me.

He used to stand by me no matter what.

The second I frowned; he’d cup my face and move heaven and earth to fix it.

“What’s wrong? Who upset you?”

“Tell me. I’ll go teach them a lesson.”

But the one who ended up hurting me most was the man I loved most.

I took a deep breath, trying to stay calm.

“When did it start?”

Was it when he stopped coming home? When he hid his social media?

Or when he started zoning out around me, not hearing a word I said?

Derek shook his head. Neither.

It was that trip. The three of us.

I went to bed early with a cold. They went out drinking.

Things quickly heated up.

I closed my eyes. The helplessness was suffocating.

I turned to leave. Amanda dropped to her knees in front of me.

“Vivian, I’m sorry. I seduced him. It’s my fault.”

“Hit me. Curse me out. Just please… please don’t be this calm…”

Her voice cracked. Her eyes desperate.

She’d been with me through all of it.

Countless times I’d calmly told her to go home, then turned around and hurt myself.

She hid every sharp object. But I always found a way.

She’d hold me, crying, begging me to live.

But none of that pain came close to what she’d given me today.

Derek couldn’t stand it. He tried to pull her up.

She wouldn’t move. Stayed on her knees, reaching for my hand.

“Vivian, I don’t want to lose you. You’re my best friend…”

“I’ll divorce him. Take my son and leave.”

“I’ll give back everything that’s yours, okay?”

Her eyes were sincere. Just like when she swore I’d be happy.

But some things don’t just go away.

I pulled my hand back, slowly.

“After today, we’re not friends.”

“And Derek and I? We’re done.”
