When Ava left the hospital, she found Rafael waiting outside.

He wore a light gray trench coat and stood beneath a red maple tree, looking down at the falling leaves.

Ava exhaled and walked over.

“Were you waiting for me?”

Rafael looked up and smiled at her.

“If you were hoping I was waiting for you, then I was.”

Ava smiled.

“Then you were waiting for me.”

Rafael froze for a moment before lowering his head.

“Are you going back to him?”

Ava raised an eyebrow.

“Why would you think that?”

Rafael didn’t look at her.

“Because… he saved you.”

Ava understood and asked with a smile, “Do you want me to go back to him?”

“Absolutely not.”

Rafael jerked his head up, his voice urgent.

Ava couldn’t help laughing.

She turned and started walking.

“Then I won’t.”

Rafael stood frozen for several seconds before quickly catching up.

“Why?”

Ava didn’t answer.

Instead, she asked, “Why don’t you want me to go back to him?”

Rafael pressed his lips together.

Because I like you.”

“I have for a long time, strce before you knew me.”

Ava stopped.

“When?”

Rafael hesitated, then answered.

“When you were in college.”

“My parents traveled constantly for work. Your parents were my professors, and they always looked after me.”

“They talked about you all the time, even the smallest things.”

“You loved fish but hated picking out the bones. You took sugar in your coffee but no cream. You volunteered in disaster relief and worked as a wildlife photographer…”

Rafael smiled as he spoke.

“You didn’t even know me back then, but little by little, I fell for you.’

Ava studied him for a moment.

“You should know that was only the version of me my parents described. It wasn’t all of me.”

Rafael smiled.

“But it was still you, wasn’t it?”

“I once went to your university to find you, but you already had a boyfriend.”

His voice grew quieter.

“So I came back home.”

“But I never expected us to meet here.”

“I kept finding excuses to run into you and get closer to you, and then I fell for you all over again.”

Rafael looked into her eyes.

His own were slightly red.

“I regret 2 things more than anything. The first was giving up so easily 5 years ago instead of trying to win

you over. The second was nof walking you home that night.”

Ava looked at him for a long time without avoiding his gaze.

She reached up, cupped face, and spoke earnestly.

“Rafael, I like you too.”

“I’m lucky that I met you here.”

Rafael blinked, and a tear slipped down his cheek.

Ava rose onto her toes and gently kissed him.
