His Bride Was My Sister, Everyone Betrayed Me Chapter 05

“Who canceled the wedding?”

Leith stood there, like the words didn’t make sense

The manager opened his phone and showed him the chat log.

“Here, sir. Ms. Hale canceled everything a week ago. The deposit came out of her account.”

The bouquet hit the floor.

Leith stared at the screen–my photo, my name.

A cold dread washed over him.

No one spoke.

“A week ago?” Soren’s brow tightened. “That was the day of your wedding to Lyra.”

Leith’s cousin slapped his forehead.

“Wait–when she said ‘the wedding is off, she wasn’t joking?”

Odette winced. “I haven’t heard from her all week.”

“She loved you–with the wedding coming up, she would’ve been planning every detail.”

They pieced it together.

The wedding was really canceled.

I meant it when I said I was done.

I meant it when I said I was leaving.

I meant it when I said I was breaking up.

The realization hit Leith like a punch to the chest.

He remembered the look I gave him after he forced me to give blood.

Completely empty.

The same look I’d had when I was thrown out of the Hale house fourteen years ago.

Back then, I’d given up on my father.

Now I’d given up on him.

He couldn’t breathe. He didn’t care about pride anymore.

He called me over and over–but each time, the same cold voice:

“Sorry, the number you’ve dialed is unavailable.”

Soren reached for his hand.

“Don’t bother. You’ve been blocked. We all have.”

Leith stared at him like he didn’t understand.

For ten years, I’d answered every call, replied to every message.

And now I’d blocked him.

Odette stamped her foot.

“Elara is so dramatic!”

“You and Lyra just got your license–does she really have to make a scene over something that

small?”

Soren tugged at his tie. “She’s just throwing a tantrum. She’ll get over it.”

But his voice was too loud. Like he was trying to convince himself.

Leith held onto that word.

Tantrum.

That was it. She was upset about the license.

He took a breath–tried to push the fear down.

“Has anyone talked to her this week?”

He looked at each of them. They all looked away.

No one had reached out.

Soren blamed me for hurting Lyra.

Odette blamed me for ruining the wedding.

Everyone else just followed along.

years of friendship–and not one of them had ever stood by me.

Leith’s cousin finally spoke up, avoiding his eyes.

“Leith… I think Elara quit her job.”

Leith snapped his head up. “When?”

“A few days ago.”

“I heard through work–but you never seemed to care, so I didn’t mention it.”

Quit. I loved that job.

I would never leave it.

Panic wrapped around his chest like a vise.

He closed his eyes and forced the words out.

“Find her. All of you. Find her now!”
