He Wrapped Me Up for His Crush. Now I Live in His Head. Chapter 12

Logan’s appearance was just a small interruption. My life kept moving forward.

In midterms, I placed third in the grade. Ms. Reynolds made a point of praising me in class.

“Avery is a transfer student but she’s adapted incredibly well.”

“Everyone should learn from her.”

The applause was loud. No snide remarks. No one called me a nerd.

Only genuine recognition.

Ethan finally worked up the courage to approach me.

“Avery, are you free this weekend? Want to catch a movie with me?”

He was so nervous his ears turned red. His palms were probably sweaty.

Zoe was making crazy gestures behind him.

Say yes.

Say yes.

I thought for a moment.

“Sure.”

Why not?

I deserved to be treated seriously.

I deserved a normal high school life with someone who liked me properly.

Ethan looked like he might jump for joy.

“Really? That’s awesome.”

“I mean…”

“Thank you for giving me a chance.”

He scratched his head, grinning like a kid.

That weekend we watched an animated movie.

Ethan was thoughtful.

He bought popcorn and Coke, and brought tissues.

“I heard this movie is a little emotional. If you cry, you can use these.”

I smiled.

He was so nervous he didn’t know what to do with his hands. The movie was great.

It was about growth and courage. I didn’t cry, but I felt warm inside.

After the movie, he walked me home.

“I had a really good time today,” he said.

“Me too.”

“So…”

“Can I ask you out again sometime?”

He looked at me hopefully.

Like a big golden retriever.

I nodded.

His smile lit up his whole face.

So this was what being cherished felt like.

Careful, sincere, and steady. I didn’t have to watch his mood or fear being left behind.

Just simple mutual liking.

When Aunt Claire found out, she teased me.

“Our Avery has a boyfriend now?”

I blushed.

“Not yet…”

Just friends for now, but maybe it would become something more.

“It won’t be long.”

She winked.

“I know Ethan. He’s a good kid. Basketball captain, solid grades too.”

“If you like him, go for it.”

Go for it.

Yeah.

I should be bold. No more being the one who lowered herself, waiting
by someone’s side for occasional crumbs of attention, hoping he’d
think of me when he felt like it.

I deserved better.
