He Wrapped Me Up for His Crush. Now I Live in His Head. Chapter 02

Logan finally showed up.

He looked completely casual, hands in his pockets, strolling over like he was checking on his latest prank.

The guys who had done it followed behind him, along with Harper Lane.

She wore a white dress with her long hair down, still the school’s adored cheer captain.

She covered her mouth, pretending to be shocked. “Oh my God, you guys actually did it? That’s crazy!”

But the excitement in her voice was impossible to miss.

My heart went ice cold. So this pain was just entertainment for her.

“Of course,” Logan said proudly. “Queen Harper wanted it, so we delivered.”

He said it so softly, almost pleading. I’d never heard him speak like that before.

And he’d certainly never spoken to me that way.

He walked to the base of the flagpole and looked up at me. The sunset lit his face. Those familiar features I’d known for sixteen years suddenly felt like a stranger’s.

The eyes I once thought would protect me now only held amusement.

“How’s the view up there, Avery?”

He was actually smiling. He didn’t see me as a person.

I was just a prop to entertain Queen Harper.

“Alright, that’s enough. Cut her down,” he said lightly, like he was telling someone to clean up the field.

A few guys untied the rope without caring if I fell.

I hit the ground hard. The impact knocked the air out of my lungs. I couldn’t move from the pain.

I curled into a ball like a dying insect.

Logan crouched down and roughly tore the bandages off my face.

He didn’t care if it hurt.

The bandages pulled at my skin. I gasped.

When he saw my swollen eyes, he paused.

For a second, I thought he might feel sorry. Might apologize.

But he quickly went back to normal.

“Why are you crying? It was just a prank. We’ve messed with each other plenty of times before.”

He said it so easily, like this really was just a normal friend joke.

But he forgot.

Our old jokes never crushed someone’s dignity. They never humiliated someone in front of hundreds of people. They were never this cruel.

I stared at him without speaking. My throat felt blocked. I couldn’t get a single word out.

Not because I didn’t want to. Because I didn’t know what to say.

How do you question sixteen years of friendship? How do you accuse someone?

He shifted uncomfortably under my gaze. “Don’t look at me like that. It’s creepy.”

His eyes darted away. The guilt was obvious.

But he quickly found an excuse. “Harper said yesterday she’d never seen a real mummy, so we thought…”

“Anyway, it’s not a big deal. You’re fine, aren’t you?”

Fine?

I looked at my bloody wrists. At my clothes stained with spit.

This was fine?

The other guys chimed in.

“Yeah, Avery, don’t be so dramatic.”

“We worked hard to get you up there.”

“If it wasn’t for Logan, no one would bother wasting time on you. Don’t act like you’re that important.”

Every word reminded me.

I didn’t deserve respect. I didn’t deserve to be treated well.

I was only good for being used as someone else’s entertainment.

Harper walked over, putting on a sorry face.

“Avery, I’m so sorry. I really didn’t know they’d do this.”

“I was just joking…” Her eyes turned red like she was about to cry.

She looked like the victim.

Guys immediately comforted her. “Harper, don’t blame yourself. This isn’t your fault.”

“Yeah, Avery just can’t take a joke.”

“Queen Harper, you’re too kind for worrying about her.”

I slowly stood up.

My legs shook. My wrists and ankles were raw with blood. Every inch of my body hurt.

But I didn’t cry out. I just gave Logan one last look.

That look held sixteen years of memories, countless shared moments, and my heart shattering completely.

Then I turned and walked away.

His voice followed. “Hey, Avery! Where are you going? Don’t be mad, okay? I’ll buy you burgers and fries to make up for it?”

“Avery! Stop!”

I didn’t turn back.

My steps were unsteady, every one feeling like walking on broken glass. But I couldn’t stop.

If I stopped, I was afraid I’d break down and sob in front of him.

And then I would have truly lost everything.
