He Wasn’t That Unconscious Chapter 09

Sienna started shaking.

This time, I refused to back down.

I’d done it. And even if nobody wanted to admit it, the hospital security footage could prove I was telling the truth.

After only a brief hesitation, I stepped forward. “It was me. I’ve been the one taking care of you these past six months. I stayed by your side. I played movies, music, and opera for you. I read you the news. I wiped you down every day. It was always me.”

Things had gone completely off script.

Yet when Penelope saw me finally standing up for myself, she actually looked relieved.

Felix almost smiled, like my answer had amused him.

Like he was satisfied.

The moment our eyes met, a strange thought crossed my mind.

What if he’d remembered everything the second he woke up?

Everything from when he’d been a spirit.

Maybe he’d dragged this out on purpose to see whether I’d finally stand up for myself.

The only thing I wondered was whether he remembered the twenty million dollars.

If he did, could he hurry up and transfer it already?

That alone would drive Sienna insane.

Sienna clearly sensed things slipping out of her control.

But she still refused to give up. “No, don’t listen to her! She’s lying! Felix, you know what Ruth is like. She’s bullied me since we were kids. She’s always trying to take what’s mine.

“Now she’s even trying to steal my man—”

She shouldn’t have said that.

The moment those lies left her mouth, Felix’s expression changed.

His eyes sharpened, like another piece of his memory had suddenly clicked into place.

His face turned cold. “Sienna, I don’t want to see you right now. Get as far away from me as possible.”

Penelope immediately signaled the bodyguards.

Just as Sienna was about to be dragged out, Felix spoke again.

“Wait.”

Hope flashed across her face.

She thought he’d changed his mind.

Instead, Felix leaned over and whispered something to Penelope.

Then he looked at me and smiled. “Ruth, to thank you for taking care of me these past six months, I’ve decided to give you twenty million dollars as a gift.

“There are plenty of witnesses here. It’s completely voluntary, so accept it without worry.”

A second later, Penelope handled the transfer.

My phone buzzed.

A bank notification.

The money had arrived.

Twenty million dollars.

My head spun. I was so happy I nearly passed out.

Then Sienna screamed, snapping me back to reality.

“Ruth! Why do you deserve that?”

Her face twisted with jealousy, her eyes bloodshot.

“That twenty million should’ve been mine! If I hadn’t given you the chance, would you ever have gotten this lucky? Give it to me! Give me the money!”

She lunged at me.

The bodyguards hauled her away without hesitation, along with my parents.

The media captured every second of her public meltdown.

For the first time, it felt like justice.

I made up my mind right then.

I’d hire the best lawyer I could find, sue my parents for years of abuse, and cut them out of my life for good.

After the media asked a few more questions, the room finally quieted down.

Penelope didn’t blame me.

Instead, she thoughtfully gave Felix and me some privacy.

But now that I was standing in front of the real, living Felix, I suddenly felt awkward.

Felix noticed me fidgeting and smiled. He narrowed his eyes.

“How did you know blue cheese is my favorite?”
