He Wasn’t That Unconscious Chapter 10

He Wasn’t That Unconscious Chapter 10

“Huh?”

I was still riding the high of getting twenty million dollars and didn’t process the question right away.

Felix let out a short laugh. “Because I cared way too much about appearances—and because Sienna hated strong smells—I told everyone I couldn’t stand blue cheese. But during those six months, I couldn’t speak.

“So how did you know?”

“Tell me the truth, Ruth. When my mind was separated from my body… could you see my spirit?”

Oh, crap.

So that question earlier hadn’t just been a signal.

He’d been testing a theory.

“I… uh… while you were in a coma, you talked in your sleep sometimes. I was in your room twenty-four-seven, so I accidentally overheard you.”

My eyes darted away.

Felix immediately pressed.

“Oh yeah? What exactly did I say?”

“You said you were craving blue cheese. You said that once you woke up, you’d eat a whole wedge by yourself—”

I slapped a hand over my mouth.

Crap.

I’d just repeated his spirit’s exact words without thinking.

Seeing my red face and obvious panic, Felix finally smiled.

A real smile.

The first one since he’d woken up.

“I had my suspicions. Otherwise, how could it be that every time I thought about blue cheese, you’d bring me some the next day? I’d think about a movie, and you’d put it on immediately.

“I thought we were just weirdly in sync. Turns out you could actually see my spirit.

“Tell me honestly. Did you jump in earlier because you heard me say I’d give you twenty million dollars?”

I scratched my head and laughed awkwardly.

Hey, liking money is normal.

And Felix certainly wasn’t hurting for it.

After a moment, I added, “But out of everyone in the world, I was the only one who could see your spirit and hear your thoughts.”

“That has to mean something, right?”

The atmosphere suddenly shifted.

Something shifted between us.

Maybe…

I’d gone too far.

To my surprise, Felix nodded. “You’re right.

“It means we’re meant to be.”

With some effort, Felix slowly lifted his arm and reached for me.

His fingers closed gently around my hand. “Ruth, I like how brave you are. How you finally stood up for yourself. From now on, your family won’t get to bully you anymore. I told you I’d deal with them, and I will.”

The warmth of his hand made everything feel real for the first time.

This was our first conversation face-to-face.

And yet, it felt like we’d known each other forever.

“Since you said that, I’ll hold you to it. Make them regret everything.”

Felix looked happy that we clicked so easily.

A faint blush crept across his face—the same way it used to when he was a spirit.

“And about what my mom promised you,” he said. “The marriage. The wedding.

“Once I’m fully recovered, I’ll keep my word.”

Heat rushed to my ears.

“I believe you. Should I bring you some blue cheese now?”

Felix laughed.

And I couldn’t help laughing too.

After all, the twenty million dollars was already sitting in my bank account.

Felix was a man who kept his promises.

And on our wedding day, I’d make sure my parents saw it with their own eyes.

Who said seeing spirits was a curse?

Felix standing in front of me was proof it had been a blessing all along.
