He Wasn’t That Unconscious Chapter 08

The standoff dragged on until Penelope finally spoke.

“Ruth, I’ve never seen my son eat blue cheese. He watches what he eats. Normally, he wouldn’t touch something that rich. I know you’re having a hard time accepting this, but given the situation…”

The more she talked, the heavier my heart felt.

So everything Felix’s spirit told me had been wrong?

Had I gotten my hopes up for nothing?

“Ruth, I know you’re a good person. But Sienna is my son’s fiancée. Some things aren’t for us to decide. Let’s stick to our agreement, okay? That way this doesn’t get ugly, and you don’t end up embarrassing yourself.”

Maybe Penelope was trying to give me a graceful way out.

Right there in the room, she transferred fifty thousand dollars to me and promised she’d arrange additional compensation after I left.

It was a lot of money.

Enough to leave, study the major I’d always wanted, maybe even go abroad.

But looking at Felix’s familiar yet unfamiliar face, all I felt was unwillingness.

Why?

I remembered what his spirit used to whisper to me. “You deserve to be remembered. You deserve to be acknowledged. Are you really going to let Sienna walk all over you forever?

“If I don’t remember, then tell the truth yourself.

“Don’t be weak. Don’t let Sienna take what’s yours again.

“I’d look down on you.”

The memory reignited something inside me.

Felix narrowed his eyes, like he wanted to say something.

Meanwhile, Sienna looked pleased with herself. She grabbed his arm.

“See? She’s just here for a handout. I’ll have her thrown out right now.”

She shot my parents a look.

They immediately moved toward me, ready to drag me out like they’d done countless times before.

Then Felix, now stronger than before, suddenly snapped,

“Shut up.”

Since waking up, it was the first time I’d seen unmistakable disgust in his eyes.

That single command gave me courage.

“Felix clearly has something he wants to ask me. Until he personally tells me to leave, I’m staying.”

Penelope seemed caught off guard by my resolve. Surprise flashed across her face, along with a hint of approval.

Felix kept staring at Sienna until she reluctantly stepped away from the bed.

Then he pointed at me again. “Come here. Read some financial news to me.”

Sienna and I understood instantly.

Felix hadn’t bought her story.

He must’ve remembered fragments of something, but not enough to be sure. He was trying to recreate familiar moments and find the truth.

Sienna panicked. “Felix, what’s the point of this? I’m your fiancée. Everyone knows we were about to get married. If your fiancée wasn’t taking care of you, then who was? Some random stranger you barely know?

“She came into the room a few times at most. At most, I asked her to help out a few times. That doesn’t change our engagement. Felix, you—”

This time, Penelope cut her off.

She’d clearly had enough.

“Be quiet, or leave.”

I immediately took the opportunity.

Picking up the tablet from the nightstand, I started reading financial news to Felix.

I deliberately used the same tone and rhythm I always had.

And just like before, I slipped in a few random side comments of my own.

Felix’s expression never changed.

But Sienna’s face grew paler with every passing second.

By the time I finished, Felix looked noticeably stronger.

He motioned for the doctor to raise the bed so he could sit upright.

Then he looked from Sienna to me. “I’ll ask one more time.

“Who exactly has been taking care of me for the past six months?”
