He Used His Secret Mistress for Revenge Chapter 04 The Letter That Stopped the Wedding

Lucia immediately forced her way to Vito’s side and seized his arm.

Her shrill voice cut through the noise filling the banquet hall.

“Why shouldn’t we play it? We spent two weeks preparing everything. We can’t stop halfway now.”

She lifted her chin.

There was no sympathy in her eyes, only years of accumulated hatred and satisfaction.

“Do you suddenly feel sorry for that girl? Mario stole the port concession and schemed to have me driven overseas. I struggled abroad, went hungry, and lived at other people’s mercy every day. Are we supposed to forget all of that?”

Vito remained rooted to the floor.

The news anchor’s cold announcement repeated inside his head while memory after memory surfaced with brutal clarity.

At the visa center, Laila’s eyes had been red and her documents soaked with tears.

He had assumed she was preparing to make a scene and embarrass him.

He had not offered a single word of comfort.

After her miscarriage, she had lain weak and bloodless in the hospital.

His first response to the pregnancy report had not been concern.

He had immediately calculated how to use it to humiliate Mario.

Vito had always been certain that Laila loved him beyond reason.

No matter how coldly he treated her, how often he deceived her, or how deeply he hurt her, she would lower her head, forgive him, and remain obediently by his side.

Now the news had declared her dead at sea.

though an enormous stone had crushed his chest, leaving him unable to breathe.

“The wedding will continue.”

Vito’s lips trembled as he forced out the words.

His voice was hollow and held no conviction.

An old friend who had followed him for years stepped forward and stopped the man preparing the video.

“Vito, Laila is probably dead. She’s gone. Leave her some dignity and destroy every recording.”

“Dignity?” Lucia raised her voice so the entire hall could hear. “This is all something she staged! What are

the chances of a plane crashing at exactly the right time? She must have faked her death and gone into hiding to escape the consequences.”

“The video has to be played. I want to see whether she can keep pretending to be pitiful while she watches from wherever she’s hiding.”

The elders and guests from the various crime families stopped talking.

Whispers spread through the hall.

Everyone thought Lucia was vicious for clinging to revenge when a life had apparently been lost.

Vito still had not stopped her.

The guests could only wait for his decision.

His face was white as paper.

Fragments of the past three years continued replaying before him.

He shook his head repeatedly and muttered under his breath.

“No. Nothing happened to her. She can’t be dead. Absolutely not…

Two bodyguards hurried into the banquet hall carrying an elegant gift box.

They bowed before Vito.

“Godfather, someone left this at the entrance for Ms. Romano. There was no sender information.”

Light returned to Vito’s deadened eyes.

He snatched the box from them, his fingers shaking uncontrollably.

“I knew she was alive. She’s only hiding. Where is she?”

The bodyguard lowered his head.

“The courier placed the box at the entrance and left immediately. No one saw Ms. Romano.”

The fragile hope on Vito’s face shattered.

He untied the ribbon with trembling hands.

There was nothing inside except a letter written in my familiar handwriting.

Vito read it one word at a time.

His body shook harder with every line.

All color drained from his face, and regret, panic, and pain crowded into his eyes.

His old friends moved closer and read over his shoulder.

Every one of them fell silent.

The letter explained that I had overheard his entire revenge plan at the club.

For the sake of our child who had never been born, I begged him to spare my father.

And

If the grievances between the older generation could not be settled, then my disappearance, or even my life should be enough to repay the debt.

I asked only that he not play the videos in public and strip my aging father of his final dignity.

Those few lines carried every humiliation I had endured for three years and the complete death of my love.

Vito suddenly raised one hand.

“Stop the wedding.”

The host froze.

The music cut off without warning.

Shock erupted through the entire banquet hall.

Lucia grabbed Vito’s arm and urged him frantically to reconsider.

He flung her away.

Clutching my letter, Vito stared hollowly at the news broadcast on the screen and could not say another word.
