He Turned Me Down, So I Dated His Best Friend Instead Chapter 06

For the next couple of weeks,

Dawn kept showing up in our classroom.

But I always sat as far from them as I could.

I overheard people whispering.

“This is Julian’s longest relationship, isn’t it?”

“I think so. Has Hartwell’s resident heartbreaker finally settled down?”

“My friend is going to lose her mind. She’s liked Julian forever and has been waiting for him and

Dawn to break up.”

I listened in silence.

But when I turned back to the board, my thoughts wandered anyway.

At the end of the month,

our cohort organized an in–person team game worth participation credit.

Attendance was mandatory.

We had to work in pairs.

Somehow, Julian and I ended up together again.

Before, whenever we had an activity like this, I’d silently prayed for the chance to work with him.

It never happened.

Now that I wanted to avoid him,

we’d been assigned together twice in a row.

The first time had been a seminar project with seven or eight people per group. Switching hadn’t drawn much attention, and no one would have connected it to Julian.

But this time…

I looked up at the man in front of me and said slowly, “I’ll ask my roommate if she’ll trade partners

with me.”

His face darkened, and his smile never reached his eyes. “Really?”

Then it clicked.

He and Dawn were serious. Maybe he didn’t want to be paired with another girl.

But I didn’t know any of the other guys in our cohort well, so I added, “Or I can trade with one of your friends.”
