The sun shone brightly that afternoon.

The field was crowded. As soon as the words left my mouth, someone brushed past and knocked me

off balance.

I nearly fell.

Julian reached out, grabbed my wrist, and steadied me.

Skin against skin.

I jerked free and backed away. “Come on. Who am I switching with? Once the activity starts, it’ll be

too late.”

Julian’s fingers curled around empty air.

After a long pause, he answered coldly, “Whoever.”

I searched the crowd until I spotted one of his roommates. I hurried over, explained the situation, and traded partners with him.

On my way back to the dorm that afternoon,

Iran into Dawn on the stairs.

She wore a dress that made her fair skin seem almost luminous.

She stood on the landing with her phone to her ear and a large bag of snacks in one hand.

When she saw me, her face lit up. “Hey, it’s you!”

The call was still connected, and Julian’s unusually gentle voice drifted through the speaker. “Who did you run into?”

Dawn said, “Your classmate. The girl Mason Wilder posted about on Hartwell Confessions.”

“I only put it together a couple of days ago. You could’ve told me sooner.”

I blinked.

So his name was Mason Wilder.

On the other end, Julian’s voice chilled in an instant. “I forgot.”

Dawn ignored him and looked back at me. She pulled two chocolate bars from the bag and held them out. “These are so good. Want to try them?”

I glanced down.

It was Julian’s favorite brand.

Back when we’d been close, he’d given me a box of the same chocolates.

I couldn’t bear to eat them.

They were still sitting in my cabinet.

Now it felt like another lifetime. I shook my head. “No, thanks. I’m trying to cut back, but that’s

really sweet of you.”
