He Treated Me as a Servant but Begged Me Not to Leave Chapter 04

That last year abroad, Landon and I grew closer.

In every sense of the word.

He got hooked on it.

I loved every second of it.

We were like any ordinary couple.

That all changed when we came back home.

And it all unraveled when Chloe showed up at Landon’s company.

She’d bombed her exams back then, gone to community college, and after graduation became a sales rep.

An entry-level position like that—her resume shouldn’t have ever crossed Landon’s desk.

But a few days later, she beat out more experienced candidates and got hired.

I didn’t ask a single question, but Landon explained on his own.

“She’s having a rough time. I’m just giving her a hand. It won’t go any further than that.”

Life went on. Sometimes we had dinner at the Hale house together.

At the table, Vivian brought up engagement.

Before I could speak, Landon said, “Blair’s career is taking off. No need to rush.”

I froze for a beat, then smiled and nodded.

I figured I should visit Landon’s office.

And I wasn’t disappointed.

Chloe walked in carrying a homemade lunch box and set it down in front of him.

She said, “Remember you told me on the phone you’d been craving this? Try it.”

Landon, being polite, took several generous bites.

It was actually a pretty warm scene.

So I pushed the door open and said, “Can I have some too?”

Chloe’s face went white.

Landon stepped in front of her without a change in expression, “What are you doing here?”

I raised an eyebrow and smiled. “Just checking who my boyfriend is having lunch with.”

The moment I said that, Chloe couldn’t take it.

She muttered “I’m sorry” and ran out with her container.

Landon’s eyes went cold, “Coey… she’s skittish. You didn’t have to go that hard on her.”

Then he strode out after her.

When I caught up, Chloe was crying, “Landon, I can’t have lunch with you anymore—I don’t want to be the other woman.”

Landon said without hesitation, “You’re not the other woman.”

“Blair is the one who came after.”

Chloe shot back, “But you’re already together. That makes me the other woman.”

Before I could even admire her self-awareness, I heard Landon say, “No.”

“I’ve always suspected that night was her setup.”

“After all, she’d been crushing on me for years.”

Chloe finally stopped crying.

That night, Landon told me he owed Chloe.

Because he’d missed that exam, Chloe had been crippled with guilt. She’d fallen into depression and given up on repeating, so he had to go along with her.

After that, every time Chloe saw me, she acted superior.

She threw my lunch box in the trash, put hers in front of Landon, and said, “Mr. Hale has picky tastes. He’ll only eat what I make.”

Landon didn’t deny it.

Like the guy who’d eaten countless meals I’d cooked abroad wasn’t even the same person.

Watching this, I almost laughed at the whole spectacle.

I was dying to hear Landon finally say “we’re done”.

Finally, I showed up again and heard suggestive sounds from the office lounge.

Real smooth. They hadn’t even bothered to lock the door.

I pushed it open. Landon was crouched on one knee, rubbing Chloe’s swollen ankle.

When he saw me, his expression froze, and a flash of panic crossed his eyes.

“What are you doing here?”

I held up the ultra-thin condom pack in my hand and grinned.

“Figured you might’ve forgotten to grab one in your hurry.”
