He Treated Me as a Servant but Begged Me Not to Leave Chapter 02

She said, “Landon, we’re students. School comes first.”

His face went dark.

But then she added, “After graduation, I’ll seriously consider your confession.”

The dark look on his face melted instantly. “Good. I’ll hold you to that.”

After that, Landon actually shaped up and started hitting the books for real.

Having to wait only made him want her more.

They weren’t officially together, but the flirty tension between them was palpable.

He called her “Coey,” and she’d blush and shoot him a playful glare.

He used his allowance to pay for all her meals.

When she tried to say no, he brushed it off—said the food’d go to waste otherwise.

He sent her gifts every few days, and she repaid him by tutoring him.

They were one step away from making it official.

I listened to it all from my seat and slowly went numb.

SAT came fast.

But right at that critical time, Chloe’s family fell apart.

Her dad somehow heard about her and Landon—he beat her and then demanded money from Landon.

Landon answered her call and left ten minutes before the exam started.

The result was—

Landon missed the exam protecting Chloe and ended up with a broken leg.

It blew up, and when Vivian asked me, I had to tell her everything.

Landon got grounded and confined to the house.

When I brought him food, he picked up the soup bowl and poured it over my head.

“Blair, you don’t actually think you’re some kind of future wife for me, do you? Tattling to my mom behind my back like that.”

“You make me sick.”

Soup dripped down my face, bits of vegetables stuck in my hair, as I stood there staring right back at him.

My real name used to be “Witch”. Vivian took me to change it.

She’d been good to me. I didn’t mind taking the fall if it kept things smooth between them.

When exam results came out, the Hales decided to send Landon abroad.

Vivian looked at me. “Blair, do you want to go overseas with Landon?”

“I know you did well on your exams, but studying abroad is another path. The two of you would have each other.”

Have each other?

I’d been taking care of him my whole life.

I could see right through her little plan.

Under her hopeful gaze, I said, “Yes.”

Landon snorted and went to his room.

While packing, he passed me and said, “Blair, you really are shameless about following me.”

I denied it, said I just wanted to see the world.

Landon didn’t believe me.

The night before we left, I heard him on the phone with Chloe.

“I don’t blame you. I never have. It’s not your fault.”

“Coey, you can’t choose the family you’re born into.”

The crying on the other end never stopped.

Soon I watched him sneak out by climbing over the back wall and disappear into the night.

Vivian heard the noise and came out, so she asked, “Did someone open the door?”

She was about to check on Landon’s room, but I stepped out from the corner.

“It was me, Vivian. I got up for water.”

Early the next morning, Landon still wasn’t back.

I called him several times—no answer, then his phone went dead.

I couldn’t hide it much longer.

So I faked the worst crying fit I could manage and broke down right there.

I sobbed about how terrified I was to go abroad.

Vivian’s attention shifted completely to me.

She comforted me, “It’s okay, Blair. Landon will be with you.”

“You’ve always liked him, haven’t you?”

“Maybe this is your chance. You two might actually get together.”

So she’d known all along.

I nodded obediently, still just stalling for time.

But then I heard a mocking laugh.

Landon had come back at some point and was standing there, looking at me like I was something he’d stepped in.
