Ethan spent the next few days at the hospital with Scarlett.

The morgue couldn’t reach him, so they called me.

His sister’s time was up. She had to be buried.

I thought about how she used to call me “sister,” and my chest ached. I arranged the funeral myself.

The day of the burial, we were heading toward the Vance private cemetery when Ethan and Scarlett showed up.

Scarlett saw the casket and wrinkled her nose.

“I finally get out of the hospital and come home to this? It’s a bad omen.”

“And you’re burying some cursed corpse in the Vance cemetery? You want the whole city laughing at this family?”

Ethan’s face was murderous.

“Claire, why the hell would you bring your sister here? You want to taint our land?”

My hands shook at my sides.

“Scarlett, you killed her. You don’t get to point fingers. Aren’t you afraid she’ll crawl out of the ground and come for you?”

Scarlett flinched and threw herself into Ethan’s arms.

“Mr. Vance, I can’t look at it. It brings everything back. My depression’s coming back. If she’s buried here, I’ll never get better.”

Ethan wrapped his arm around her and gave the guards a look.

“Nobody’s burying a cursed body on my land. Take her to the crematorium. Dump the ashes in the ocean.”

Guards shoved me aside. My back slammed against the casket, pain shooting through my spine.

They started prying the coffin open with a knife.

I scrambled to my feet.

“Ethan, you can’t do this to her!”

He scoffed.

“I paid for her. That money bought her body. I’ll do whatever I want with it.”

The coffin cracked open.

One guard grabbed the body and dragged it out like trash.

Scarlett screamed.

She stumbled forward and knocked over the memorial candle. It landed on the body. Flames caught instantly.

She looked up, all wide-eyed innocence.

“Mr. Vance, I didn’t mean to! The body scared me!”

Ethan patted her back.

“It’s fine. Saves us a trip to the crematorium.”

I stared at him.

“Ethan. You’ll regret this.”

He laughed.

“Why would I regret burning your sister’s corpse?”

He lifted Scarlett into his arms and stepped over the body. They walked back to the villa.

If he’d looked down, just once, he’d have seen the face of his own sister.
