Day three. I did something he didn’t know about.

I reached out to Chloe.

Not a call. A message. I added her on Instagram and sent:

[Chloe, this is Vivian Rhodes. Bradley’s wife. Would you be open to meeting for a quick chat?]

No reply.

Four hours later, she answered.

[Ms. Rhodes, it’s not what you think.]

[I’m not assuming anything. I just have a few questions. In person.]

Two more hours passed. She agreed.

We met at a coffee shop by the entrance of Lakeside Vista.

She showed up with makeup on, but her eyes were still a little red.

She sat down.

I cut her off. “I’ll ask, you answer. Is that okay?”

She nodded.

“How long have you been seeing Bradley?”

“Four… a little over four months.”

“What did he tell you about me?”

She lowered her head. “He said… he said your marriage wasn’t good. That you were in the middle of a divorce. That the paperwork was already in process.”

She nodded. “Yes.”

Chloe’s hand shook. A bit of coffee spilled onto the table.

“He said the place at Lakeside Vista…”

“What did he say?”

She looked up at me. “He said he bought it. That he put down five hundred thousand as a down payment. Thirty-year mortgage. Monthly payments over six thousand.”

I didn’t speak.

She kept going. “He said after the divorce, the house would be his. Since it was his premarital asset.”

She nodded. “Yes.”

I took out my phone and opened a photo.

I placed the phone in front of her.

Her voice trembled. “He told me… that the five hundred thousand down payment was his…”

I let out a cold laugh. “He’s never even put up fifty thousand.”

Chloe’s hands lay flat on the table. No more shaking. But her nails were digging into her palms.

“One more thing,” I said. “He sends you $3,800 every month. What did he tell you that was?”

“He said… it was his bonus.”

1 shook my head. “He doesn’t get bonuses. His salary is twelve thousand a month. Fixed.”

Her lips parted, but no sound came out.

I exhaled. “The $3,800 he gives you is $800 more than what he contributes to this household.”

The café speakers were playing a foreign song.

Chloe stared at the deed on my phone for a long time.

Then she looked up. “Ms. Rhodes.”

“Yes.”

“He told me he makes thirty thousand a month.”

“Twelve.”

“He told me the car is his.”

“It’s registered under my name.”

Chloe pushed her coffee aside.

“He told me this house was his. Five hundred thousand down. Thirty-year mortgage.”

She repeated it. But this time, the tone was different.

She wasn’t telling me anymore. She was convincing herself.

“I pay him three thousand every month. He said it was to help cover rent. Because I’m living in his place.”

Chloe paid Bradley three thousand every month. Bradley sent her $3,800 every month. Money in, money out. He made a net eight hundred.

“Divorce”

“Would you be willing to write down everything he told you? Dates, locations, exact wording. As detailed as possible.”

She nodded. “Yes.”
