He Said Of Course to Everything, and I Stopped Loving Him Chapter 04

“There’s also the company. I want to transfer Lena’s shares to Sienna. I’ll probably need your help with that, too.”

“Yeah, but I’m not really worried about that. Everyone knows how much Lena loves me. She’d never leave me.”

“All right, talk later.”

I stood in the darkness, trembling uncontrollably.

I’d already decided to give up on our relationship, but hearing those words still shook me.

Without making a sound, I turned and walked away.

First thing the next morning, I went to the county clerk’s office.

“I’m sorry, but there’s no record of your marriage.”

I’d suspected as much, yet hearing it confirmed still left me stunned.

My chest tightened so painfully that I could barely breathe.

“So your marriage certificate was fake from the start, but everyone else thought it was real? Then Nolan publicly announced that you two had split up so he could be with Sienna, and they went ahead and got legally married? And your mother helped them with all of it?”

Paige sounded utterly baffled on the other end of the phone.

“Why go through all that? Why didn’t they just get married in the first place?”

“Maybe their love wouldn’t have felt so special without someone to betray,” I said flatly, sitting on a park bench.

After hanging up, I got to my feet.

That was when I noticed a small group having a picnic nearby.

My mother was laughing and playing with a little boy, while Nolan and Sienna sat together a short distance away, chatting happily.

Without hesitation, I raised my phone and took a picture.

I was about to leave when Sienna called out from behind me.

“Lena? What are you doing here?”

“Why didn’t you tell us you were here?”

Nolan looked startled at first. Then something seemed to occur to him, and he strode toward me, irritation creeping into his voice.

“Lena, have you been following us?”

For a moment, I was taken aback. Then I laughed, though there was nothing amused about it.

“Sure. If that’s what you want to believe.”

In the past, I’d have rushed over, taken Nolan’s hand, and desperately tried to explain myself, terrified he’d misunderstand me.

Now, I couldn’t even be bothered to defend myself.

I glanced at my mother and couldn’t resist one bitter remark.

“If Dad were still alive, I’m sure he’d be so proud of you. You’ve done such a wonderful job being my mother.”

Before my father passed away, I had been his greatest worry.

Back then, my mother had held his hand and promised him again and again.

“Don’t worry. I’ll give Lena enough love for both of us.”

Suddenly, Sienna slapped me.

I was stunned for a moment, then burned with anger and wanted to hit her back.

But before I could, Nolan slapped me across the face.

“You insulted your own mother first! Sienna only stepped in because she couldn’t stand watching you bully her!”

“Lena, apologize!”

My mother’s eyes reddened, and she looked at me with disappointment.

“Lena, what’s happened to you? How did you become like this?”

Seeing the three of them standing united against me, I gave a bitter smile.

I looked at Nolan and spoke calmly.

“Nolan, we need to talk.”

But before I could say anything more, his phone rang.

When he hung up, he looked visibly anxious.

“There’s something more important we need to deal with right now.”

“I’ve got something urgent to take care of. Come with me.”

He grabbed hold of me and hurried away, pulling me along.

I was about to struggle free when my phone suddenly buzzed.

It was a message from my assistant.

Assistant: [Ms. Marlowe, something’s gone seriously wrong with the project Nolan Cross is in charge of.]
