Lucas froze. “A life?”

He let go of his wrist. The cut was shallow and had already stopped bleeding.

But he grabbed a fruit knife and pressed it against his skin again. “I’ll pay you back with my life. Will you forgive me then?”

“Lucas!”

Lily screamed, looking like she was about to faint.

Zoe lunged forward and snatched the knife away. “Lucas, are you crazy? Would you really die for

her?”

The living room erupted into chaos. My dad rushed to stop Lucas from grabbing the knife again,

while my mom checked on Lily.

Zoe yanked open drawers at random, shouting at me. “Where’s the first-aid kit? Anna, are you really so cold-hearted? He’s like this and you still won’t help him?”

I was exhausted by the whole spectacle. I nodded toward the left. “Bottom drawer.”

Zoe pulled it open roughly. As she yanked out the first-aid kit, a few sheets of paper tucked underneath scattered across the floor.

She grabbed the gauze, then her eyes locked onto those papers.

She picked up one of the forms. Her eyes went wide. She whipped her head around and stared at me.

“Anna… you had an abortion?”

Everyone in the room froze, staring at me in shock.

Lucas snapped out of it and snatched the paper. His hands were shaking badly. “Six months ago… that was when I was busy with that promotion, traveling nonstop…”

Lily shot up and pointed at my face, screaming. “I knew it! You bitch! You cheated, got pregnant with some bastard’s kid, and now you’re twisting the facts to dump my son!”

“Give me back my money! Every cent my son ever spent on you!”

My dad started trembling violently. His eyes rolled back and he began to fall.

“David!”

“Dad!”

My mom and I quickly helped my dad to the sofa.

He took a sip of water and caught his breath, then slammed the table twice. “You bitch! How did raise such a bad girl like you?”

Lucas looked at me with deep emotion. “Anna, I don’t blame you. I was too busy back then. I ignored how you felt.”

“I’ll marry you. I’ll keep my promise. I’ll take care of you for the rest of my life!”

“Bullshit!”

My mom strode over and snatched the abortion record from him.

“You heartless piece of shit! How dare you accuse my daughter of cheating?” My mom pointed at

her voice cracking. “That was your child! Not even a month old, and you killed it!”

Lucas was frozen. “My… my child? But she never told me…”

My mom screamed at him, “You? Did you even pick up your phone?”

Zoe’s eyes shifted. “Tina, even if you’re trying to protect her, you can’t just blame Lucas for everything.”

“He was working overtime every single day six months ago, working himself to the bone to save up for their wedding. How could he have possibly hurt the baby?”

My mom spun around and locked eyes on Zoe, looking ready to tear her apart. “Shut your mouth! How dare you speak, you homewrecker!”

Zoe started crying, playing the victim. “Anna, we’ve been friends for so many years. Have I ever done anything to hurt you? What did you tell your mom to make her misunderstand me like this?”

“You’re the one cheating and playing the other woman, and now you’re trying to drag me down with you?”
