She gasped, her tone turning cold and sharp. “Anna, did you cheat on him? A one-night stand? Pregnant with someone’s kid? Or did someone have dirt on you, so you have to break up with him? Otherwise, why are you running?”

She fired three accusations in a row, desperate to condemn me.

Lily clutched her chest and grabbed Lucas’s arm. “Lucas, stay away from her. Come on, I’m taking,

you home.”

But Lucas refused to leave. “No. Even if Anna made a mistake, it was only a moment of weakness I

believe she still loves me.”

Lily was crying with rage. “Are you trying to piss me off? What kind of spell did this witch put on you?”

“I raised you all by myself all these years, and now you’re willing to throw your life away for her?

How could you do this to me?”

My dad’s face flushed with guilt. He slammed the table. “I’ll fix this, Lily. We’re gonna fix this.”

He grabbed my arm hard. “Let’s go. We’re going to City Hall right now. You’re marrying Lucas

today!”

I struggled against him. “Dad, no! Even if we get married, I’ll still divorce him. Don’t force me into

this!”

My dad was furious. He grabbed a roll of duct tape and started winding it around my wrists. “You think I can’t set you straight? You’re getting married today whether you like it or not! If you dare divorce him, don’t ever call me Dad again!”

He shoved me to the ground. I was on the floor, struggling and humiliated.

My mom was crying, desperate to protect me but at a loss. “Anna, just give in! Please!”

In the chaos, the coat rack by the entryway got knocked over.

The pill organizer fell out of Lucas’s jacket pocket.

Pills of all colors and sizes scattered across the floor.

My mom stared at them, frozen for a moment.

She picked up a few pills, her voice shaking. “Whose pills are these?”

Lucas quickly explained, “They’re mine.”

“Zoe helped me put together a basic emergency kit. Yesterday, when Anna’s stomach hurt, I was going to give her some. But she was upset with me and left before I could.”

My mom’s face changed completely. She swayed, then lunged forward and shoved my dad.

She wrapped her arms around me and burst into sobs.

My dad stumbled back a few steps, furious. “She’s crazy, and now you’re crazy too? Lucas thinks of everything for her. What more does she want?”

He started coming at me again, but my mom swung her hand and slapped him across the face.

“No one is forcing my daughter today! David, if you defend Lucas one more time, I’ll divorce you!”

My dad stood there holding his cheek, his lips trembling. He couldn’t say a word.

He’d never been hit by my mom before. This was the first time.

My mom helped me up from the floor.

She untied the tape from my wrists, crying the whole time.

Lily sank to the floor, smacking her thigh and wailing. “What sort of curse is this? What did my boy do to land in this awful mess?”

I flexed my wrists and said coldly, “Your son did do something unforgivable. A life was taken

because of him.”
