I pulled my mom back and said softly, “Mom, it’s okay. I can take care of this.”

While they were all still dazed, I opened the recording app on my phone.

My dad finally realized something was wrong and pulled my mom aside. “What the hell is going

on?”

My mom wiped her tears with the back of her hand. “If I hadn’t decided to bring Anna some cabbage

that day, she might be dead! Do you understand that?”

Lucas’s pupils shrank. “Dead?”

I shot a cold look at Zoe and Lucas. “You still won’t admit it even now?”

“Fine. Let’s go through everything one by one today and see if you still dare to play the victim.”

I picked up a pill from the floor, held it out in my palm, and showed it to Zoe. “The allergy med you gave Lucas. Chlorpheniramine. Its side effect is drowsiness, right?”

Zoe swallowed nervously.

Now the pill was right there in my hand. She couldn’t deny it.

“You told Lucas about the side effect. You had him mix it into my milk so I’d sleep through the whole night and wouldn’t interrupt your secret meetings. Isn’t that right?”

Lucas stared at me in shock, clearly not expecting me to bring this up. Beads of cold sweat rolled

down his forehead.

I pulled another medical report from my bag and slammed it down in front of them. Hatred crept

out of me, piece by piece.

“Lucas, did you know I have a rare allergy to chlorpheniramine? Zoe takes it and she gets sleepy. I

take it and it kills me.”

“The night my mom rushed me to the ER, I could barely breathe.”

My voice started shaking. “I survived, but the baby didn’t.”

“The baby was less than a month old. I hadn’t even realized he existed yet, and you killed the baby

with your own hands.”

His face turned pale, shaking his head frantically. “No… I didn’t know…”

My mom laughed bitterly. “That night, I called you over thirty times. Your phone was off the entire

me.”

“Did you pick up? Lucas, where were you that night?”

Lucas’s eyes darted around wildly, like he was desperately trying to remember. “That night… I

was…”

I finished for him. “You were on a business trip. Getting ready for that promotion.”

Lucas snapped his head toward me and nodded frantically. “Right, that was an emergency trip. My

phone died. I didn’t notice…”

I curled my lips. “Yeah. And that’s exactly the excuse you fed me the next day.”

He’d sounded so pitiful on the phone, complaining about difficult clients and having to drink too

much.

I was still in the hospital back then, too weak to even get out of bed. Listening to his exhausted voice, my heart melted completely.

So I lied and told him I’d be staying at my mom’s for a few days.

A week later, the moment I walked through the door, he wrapped his arms around me and buried his face in my neck, acting all clingy.

He said he was so tired, he missed me so much, and no matter how exhausted he was, it was all

worth it for our future.

I never once suspected the allergy thing had anything to do with Lucas.

I even begged my mom not to tell him, not to blame him for not answering the phone calls.

I didn’t want him to feel guilty. I didn’t want him blaming himself for a pregnancy he hadn’t even

known about.

“I felt bad for you. I felt bad that you were working so hard. I thought I was protecting the person I

loved.”

“So let me ask you again. Were you really on a business trip?”

I’d asked a colleague from his company last night.

This morning, they replied. The company’s travel records for those days didn’t have his name

anywhere.

Lucas, do you want me to call the police right now and report a poisoning? Then we can find out

exactly where you stayed that night.”

Sweat dripped down Lucas’s face.

He opened his mouth, but no words came out.

I turned and stared straight at Zoe.

“A month ago, what were you really in the hospital for?”
