I didn’t look back. I walked straight out of the Celestial Hall.

Outside, the sun was bright and the air was fresh.

Jacqueline stood by the car waiting for me. Seeing me walk out, she opened the door.

“Did it feel good?”

“Not bad.”

I slid into the car and let out a long, heavy breath.

Over the next few days, Gabriel went completely insane looking for me.

He went to my old rented apartment and waited at my friends’ houses. He even drove out to my mother’s grave, pulling an all-night vigil in the dirt.

My phone blew up with his calls, and my texts were flooded with his essays.

“Flora, I’m sorry. I really messed up.”

“I lost my mind and said those terrible things. I never looked down on your mother.”

“Please come back to me. Just come back, and I’ll do whatever you want.”

I stared at the messages, completely numb.

I blocked his number and deleted every single way he could reach me.

“Actually… he’s still searching for you everywhere.” Jacqueline glanced at me.

“A few days ago, he showed up in front of me with bloodshot eyes, asking where you were.”

“He said he can’t sleep at night. Every time he closes his eyes, he sees your back as you walked away in that black trench coat.”

“He said he didn’t realize he couldn’t live without you until he lost you.”

I calmly turned another page.

“Don’t tell me about him anymore. He has nothing to do with me.”

Jacqueline smiled. “True. You’re doing way better now.”

Six months later, an unexpected visitor arrived at my clinic.

It was raining lightly that afternoon.

The wind chimes at the door jingled.

“Welcome,” I said without looking up.
