He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 14

When graduation came, I went back to Ashford.

But I did not meet anyone.

I only went to my academic advisor’s office to pick up my diploma.

She looked at me for a while, then smiled and said, “You look much better. Leaving really was the right choice. Still, are you sure you don’t want to see your friends?”

When I heard that, for some reason, the first name that popped into my head was Nolan.

Back then, he had been the only person who gave me any warmth.

But my headspace had been too bad back then.

I still owed him a proper goodbye.

A moment later, however, my advisor mentioned Hayes.

She said, “He’s been looking for you. Every few days, he asks me whether I’ve heard anything from

you.”

I fell silent.

After a moment, I said, “Please don’t tell him.”

My advisor nodded. “All right, then. I hope life is good to you.”

I put on sunglasses and a mask, then headed toward the front gate.

The moment I reached the entrance of campus, I saw Hayes and Serena.

They were standing a little far away.

I could not hear what they were saying.

But from the look of it, they seemed to be arguing.

After a year, seeing the two of them together again no longer stirred anything in me.

I did not look for long.

I turned to leave.

But right then, someone called out to me.

“Excuse me.”

I was Hayes.

He walked up to me and stared at me hard

“Can I get to know you? What’s your name?”

I froze in place, not knowing how to answer.

The moment I spoke, he would definitely recognize my voice.

But just then, Serena caught up.

She let out a cold laugh.

“It’s been a year.”

“When are you going to get over this?”

“You see anyone who looks even a little like her and think it’s Talia.”

Hayes’s eyes stayed fixed on me. He did not even glance at Serena.

“Can I see your face?” he asked. “Please?”

I was just about to pretend I was mute when my advisor’s voice came from behind us.

“Hayes, this is Sienna, she’s in our department. She’s having an allergic reaction on her face and needs to get to urgent care. Don’t hold her up.”

“As for Talia, she did come back. She’s probably almost at the airport by now.” My advisor paused, as if she could not bear to watch him any longer. “If you go now, you might still make it.”

At that, Hayes’s eyes tightened.

He stopped insisting that I show my face.

After thanking my advisor, he hurriedly left campus.
