He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 02

After getting Serena’s permission, I gave Hayes her Instagram handle.

She was not breathtakingly beautiful, but she was bright and lively, always smiling. Since the semester had started, plenty of guys had tried to ask her out.

Obviously, none of them could compare to Hayes.

She held her phone while texting him and asked me, puzzled, “How do you know Hayes?”

I was quiet for a moment, hiding the truth.

“We followed each other by chance. We never really talked.”

Serena visibly relaxed.

“I’m so nervous. I don’t even know what to say to him.” She looked down at her phone, then back at me. “You said he likes me. Is that true?”

I nodded.

“Yeah.”

After that, I picked up my textbooks and left the dorm.

When I got downstairs to the library, a message from Hayes appeared on my phone.

Hayes: [I want to ask her to dinner tomorrow. Do you know if there’s anything she doesn’t eat? What does she like?]

I took a slow breath.

Then I put my finger on the screen and scrolled upward.

Not long ago, he had still been calling me Tally.

For the past two months, we had talked from morning until night. He knew every little thing I liked.

Before we met, he had known I loved sweet food, so he had even taken the time to learn a few complicated Southern-style dishes and desserts for me.

But Serena’s taste was the exact opposite of mine.

Talia: [She doesn’t like sweet food. She likes spicy food.]

The other side stayed silent for a long while before he finally replied.

Hayes replied: [Okay.]

Looking at that single word, I turned off my phone screen.

Sometimes, I really wanted to laugh at how unpredictable life could be.

Just a few days ago, he had still been coaxing me to sleep, saying things that made my face burn and my heart race.

Hayes: [I’m not exactly a gentleman, you know. You’ll find out when we finally meet.]

But when we did finally meet, all he left me with was an apology.
