But I never expected to get a message from Hayes.

He did not ask anything related to Serena.

Instead, he asked one question.

Hayes: [Is he pursuing you?]

By “he,” he probably meant Nolan.

I was quiet for a moment.

Talia: [No.]

He did not reply after that.

It was not until the next night that he sent another message.

Hayes: [You didn’t go to your part-time job today?]

He had actually gone back to that restaurant.

When I saw those words, my first reaction was relief.

That meant he probably did not know Serena had complained about me.

I replied.

Talia: [I won’t be going there anymore.]

After sending it, I actually held my phone and waited for his reply without thinking.

Ten minutes later, Serena came in from outside, hanging her purse on the rack while talking on the

phone with a bright smile.

She did not notice I was there.

Her phone was on speaker.

“I want to go shopping tomorrow, okay? And I want to eat something you make yourself.”

On the other end, Hayes laughed softly, sounding endlessly indulgent.

“Anything you want.”

Only then did I jolt awake and quickly back out of my chat with Hayes.

At the end of the month, our class organized a dinner.

Only after I arrived did I realize Hayes was there too.

He had come with Serena.

The entire night, I sat silently in the corner.

Toward the end, I received a call from Nolan, asking where I was and said he had something he

wanted to give me.

I gave him the address.

I stood outside waiting for Nolan.

But before he arrived, a car slowly pulled up in front of me.

The window rolled down.

It was Hayes.

His profile was sharp and clean in the dim light.

Serena was sitting in the passenger seat.

She tilted her face up, acting as if nothing unpleasant had ever happened between us.

“Heading back to campus? Get in. I’ll have my boyfriend give you a ride.”

Inside the car, Hayes pressed his lips together slightly, his eyes darkening.

He stared at me.

“He came to pick you up?”

I nodded.

“Yes.”

After saying that, I did not look at their reactions again.

I turned and walked away.

Nolan gave me a necklace.

“I happened to see it and thought it suited you, so I bought it.”

It was not a holiday.

It was just an ordinary day.

And he gave me a gift.

So much had happened lately that I had thought I was already numb.

But at that moment, looking at Nolan standing in front of me, I suddenly felt like crying.

“If you’re doing this to apologize for what happened, you really don’t have to.”

He raised an eyebrow.

“What if I said I only gave you a gift because I wanted to be your friend?”
