He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 09

He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 09

Serena began showing off her relationship extravagantly, and her Instagram was filled with posts

about him.

But none of that had anything to do with me anymore.

I found two more part-time jobs.

Every day, I left early and came back late.

Then one afternoon, while I was handing out flyers on the street, Nolan found me.

He had just come back from an out-of-state competition, still looking travel-worn as he stood in

front of me.

He reached out and handed me a check.

“Hayes asked me to give this to you.”

I hesitated for a moment.

“Didn’t he say someone named Derek was going to bring it to me?”

Nolan coughed lightly.

“I heard about it and intercepted it from Derek. Hayes doesn’t know, so don’t tell him, all right?”

I pressed my lips together.

“I won’t.”

Hayes and I probably would not have any reason to contact each other again.

At that, Nolan visibly relaxed. Then he took the stack of flyers from my hands, saying, “I’ll do it.”

Once we were done, he drove me back to campus.

Under the streetlights, I said goodbye to him.

He looked at me, something shifting faintly in his eyes, then suddenly asked a question that had

nothing to do with anything.

“I never asked you this. Other than that whole mess from a while ago, have you ever dated anyone?”

My heart jumped, and I was just about to answer when a bug landed on my shoulder.

Nolan’s expression tightened. He stepped closer to me and said, “Don’t move.”

A moment later, he brushed it off my shoulder.

I let out a breath. “Thank you.”

Because of that tiny interruption, the topic from earlier was cut off.

Neither of us brought it up again.

But as fate would have it, someone had been watching from the side for a long time.

In the quiet moonlight, he stood in the shadows and gave a faint, unreadabie laugh.

There was a trace of mockery in it.

“When did you two get so close?”

Before we could even react, he turned and walked away.

While I was still confused, Nolan raised a brow with interest.

“Looks like he probably had a fight with his girlfriend and is in a bad mood. I’ll ask him about it

later.”

I froze.

Right.

Someone like Hayes had been born rich, free to do whatever he wanted.

Other than Serena, there probably was not anyone else who could affect his mood.
