He Paid for the Wrong Heart Chapter 07

Things between Serena and Hayes were going smoothly.

But it did not take long for her to find out Hayes had mistaken me for her.

It happened during a night out.

Someone had too much to drink and, half-dazed, let it slip in front of Serena.

“Serena, I heard that fake girl lives in the same dorm as you. What does she look like? She’s

definitely not as pretty as you, right?”

“Then again, maybe she is. Nolan’s been talking about her a lot lately…”

Serena came back to the dorm with all that anger boiling over, and right front of all our roommates, she slapped me across the face.

She warned me to stay away from Hayes.

I was about to defend myself when a message from Hayes appeared on my phone.

Hayes: [Serena found out about it. She has a bad temper, so just go along with her this once. Consider it a favor to me.]

During winter break, I had been on a voice call with him when Grandma Rose suddenly fell and hit

her head.

At my most helpless moment, Hayes was the one who quickly contacted the hospital and found a top specialist for her.

He had sounded genuinely sorry when he said, “I’m out of town right now, so I can’t get away. Otherwise, I’d come stay with you.”

But he never knew that having him help me so carefully had already been more than enough for me.

And now, he was asking me to repay that favor.

I sat there in silence for a moment, then replied with a single word: [Okay.]

Then I apologized to Serena.

After lights-out, our other two roommates were still comforting her.

“Some people look so innocent, but who knew they’d pull something like that behind everyone’s

back?”

“Exactly. How shameless do you have to be to go after someone else’s boyfriend?”

Serena gave a tearful little laugh. “He’s not my boyfriend yet.

I lay in bed, my cheek throbbing so badly it hurt to breathe.

It would probably be swollen tomorrow.

But none of it hurt as much as that one message from Hayes.
