He Only Sent Me Traffic Lights but Took Wedding Photos with Her Chapter 03

He quickly covered the phone speaker and looked at me. “I’ve got something I still need to handle. I’ll take this in the study.”

Without waiting for my reply, he pressed the phone back to his ear and said, “Go on…”

He turned and walked straight into the study, closing the door behind him.

I had wanted to sit down and talk properly, to end things cleanly after ten years together.

But he wouldn’t even give me that much time.

At two-thirty in the morning, Ethan finally came back to the bedroom.

The glow from his phone screen hit my face.

A text notification chimed.

He was breathing evenly, so I picked up his phone and unlocked it.

The contact was saved as Riley.

It had to be the girl from earlier.

My fingers shook as I opened the messages. Tears blurred everything.

I scrolled for what felt like forever, but I still couldn’t see the end of it.

Sure enough—texts every thirty minutes, videos every hour.

Unlike our chat, which was nothing but a string of green and red lights.

“Baby…”

“Hugs.”

My crying must have been loud enough to wake him. Ethan stirred and pulled me into his arms.

But he felt a million miles away.

The next morning, he was already gone.

A note on the nightstand read: Last-minute business trip. Eat something good.

I held the thin piece of paper, and somehow the heavy weight in my chest started to lift.

This was finally ending.

I called the landlord and said I wouldn’t be renewing.

Back then, I was the one who paid to rent this apartment, just so he could save up to start his business.

Even though the location was miles away from my own company, I felt it was all worth it—as long as it saved him a bit of a commute.

The landlord sounded surprised. “Everything okay? You said it was convenient because it’s close to your boyfriend’s office.”

I stayed quiet for a second.

“We broke up.”

That night, a coworker invited me to a celebration dinner. I didn’t say no.

When it ended, we took a big group photo.

I was surrounded by several college-aged guys, smiling radiantly.

I posted the photo on Instagram with the caption: Why chase love when a career tastes so much sweeter?

Ethan’s message finally popped up after so long.

“Baby, you didn’t text me at all today.”

I ignored it and went to wash up.

I used to send him pictures of my work meals every day, asking what he’d eaten.

Now that I’d stopped, he didn’t know how to handle it.

After my shower, I climbed into bed and saw several more messages.

“Baby, why are you ignoring me? You mad?”

“Just because I didn’t bring you chicken noodle soup yesterday? You little glutton!”

“I’ll be back in a week. Be good.”

“Don’t get too close to those guys.”

I set our chat to Do Not Disturb.

Then I coldly replied with an emoji.

See? I’d learned from the best.
