He Locked Me in an Oven for Her, So I Called My Brother to Bury Them Both Chapter 07

I first met Asher at a gala.

Khloe was working as a waitress when someone harassed her, and I stepped in to stop it.

The man didn’t dare say anything at the time because of who I was. But as I was walking Khloe to safety, he got into his car and sped straight toward us, intent on running us down.

At the last second, Asher shoved us out of the way.

Khloe and I were unhurt, but Asher was badly injured and hospitalized. I visited him often, and slowly, something grew between us.

Once we decided to be together, Wyatt put Asher through a period of careful observation.

That night, he called me into his study.

“Callie, Asher isn’t right for you. He’s way too shrewd for his own good. Eventually, that’s going to turn around and hurt you.”

But I thought Asher was decent in every way—how he conducted himself, how he treated others. I was stubborn, determined to have no one but him.

The Griffin family only had the two of us left. Wyatt hated to see me heartbroken, so he built the Brooks family up from nothing.

In the years that followed, Asher didn’t disappoint me or Wyatt. Under his leadership, the Brooks family rose steadily.

In matters of the heart, he put me first in everything. Back then, the love between Asher and me was practically a legendary tale told in every social circle.

He remembered my birthday, our anniversaries, every little holiday we shared.

Everyone in those circles knew that Mr. Brooks never so much as looked at another woman when he was out on business. And if he wasn’t home by nine o’clock at night, no matter how important the meeting, he would always call his girlfriend to check in.

No one knew that the same Mr. Brooks who dominated the business world would also tie on an apron at home and cook meals for his girlfriend.

The night I decided to marry him, I went to Wyatt’s study again.

He was quiet for a long time, then said, “Fine then. I’ll step back. Let him take what he can from the Griffin family. Callie, if you truly believe he’s worthy of your whole life, then let time be the judge.”

The next day, chaos erupted in the underground world. Infighting broke out among the factions. Wyatt was captured by his rivals and, while still alive, cruelly mutilated—made into a human stump.

As I fled for my life, Asher saved me.

In just five days, the mighty Griffin empire collapsed again.

What terrified me was that after the Griffin family fell, Asher took over every part of our business.

I had my doubts. But back then, Asher was still just as good to me as ever. Afraid that I would be overcome with grief, he even took the initiative to bring up marriage.

Remembering how he had stormed into that basement with his men like a man possessed to save me, I chose to trust him in the end.

Later, on the day we moved into our new home after the wedding, I found Khloe sitting in the living room. I was taken aback.

Asher said, “Callie, this girl has had a rough life. I thought I’d let her and her mother come work as household staff. You saved her once, and the two of you always seemed to get along. I’m busy most of the time, she can keep you company.”

I nodded at the time and didn’t think much of it.

But as days went by, I slowly realized that Khloe’s standing in the household was hardly any lower than mine.

She had her own suite. Every night, a warm glass of milk came to my room—and one to hers too.

At mealtimes, she never ate with the other servants. Instead, she would naturally sit down with Asher and me and join our meal.

When I confronted Asher coldly, he immediately took away all of Khloe’s privileges.

But once Khloe cried in his arms, pitiful and wronged, Asher stopped caring about my feelings.

For the first time, he looked impatient. “Callie, can you stop being such a spoiled princess? Khloe’s had such a hard life. What’s wrong with me keeping her here like a sister? Can’t you show any sympathy?”

I froze.

He seemed to forget that my sympathy was the reason he had everything, the reason Khloe lived like a lady.

I was confused, but I refused to believe our strong love could break. So I never called Wyatt.

When I got pregnant, things between us got better again.

But it didn’t last. As I miscarried again and again, Asher grew more and more impatient with me.

Meanwhile, he treated Khloe like a treasure, doting on her every comfort.

And then came the day he locked me inside that heat chamber, all because of Khloe’s ridiculous “heatstroke” excuse. That was the moment I finally lost all hope in this man.

Thinking back, when Asher said he’d loved me at first sight… maybe he’d never really looked at me. Maybe it had been Khloe all along.

He only married me because he wanted access to the Griffin family’s power and riches.

How else could he have seized everything the second Wyatt stepped back?
