The elevator finally reached the first floor.

The doors opened.

He stepped out quickly.

Halfway across the lobby, his phone rang again.

He answered.

A soft voice came from the other end, carrying a hint of tears.

“Adrian… did you leave?”

“My stomach started hurting again. It really hurts this time…”

“Could you come back for a little bit? Please?”

He stopped.

“Just for a little while… okay?”

He tightened his grip on the phone and looked toward Frostvale Mountain Town.

“Adrian?”

Her voice became even softer.

“Are you mad at me?”

“I shouldn’t keep bothering you…”

“I’ll be okay on my own. You should go do what you need to do.”

Then she hung up.

He stood there, staring at the phone screen.

Then he turned around.

He walked back.

Back to that floor.

He pushed open the door.

Grace was curled up on the bed.

Her face was pale, and her eyes were slightly red.

When she saw him come back, she froze.

“Why did you come back?”

He didn’t answer.

He walked over and handed her the cup of warm water from the bedside table.

She took it.

“Thank you,” she whispered.

The moment he sat down on the couch, Ryan sent another message.

Ryan immediately called.

“What could possibly be more urgent than this?”

“Adrian, are you seriously out of your mind?”

He glanced at Grace on the bed and lowered his voice.

“She’s alone, and she’s in pain.”

There was silence on the other end for three seconds.

Then Ryan laughed.

A cold, humorless laugh.

“Fine. You win.”

“Your wife might have married someone else, and you’re here playing caretaker for another woman.”

“Adrian, you’re unbelievable. Seriously.”

The call ended.

He placed his phone face down on the table and closed his eyes.

His mind was filled with one sentence.

The groom isn’t you.

Fake.

It had to be fake.

But why wasn’t she answering his calls?

Why had she blocked him?

What exactly was she doing in Frostvale Mountain Town?

Grace spoke softly from the bed.

“Adrian, do you have something going on?”

“If you do, you should go. I’ll be fine.”

He opened his eyes and looked at her.

Her face was still pale.

Her lips were almost colorless.

“I’m fine,” he said.

“Go to sleep.”

She nodded and pulled the blanket back around herself.

He sat on the couch, watching the sky outside slowly darken.

He opened his phone and stared at the screenshot of Ethan’s Status that Ryan had sent him.

It was a photo of a Marriage License, along with two wedding photos.

The decorations around them were in soft gray-pink tones.

Nora was holding a beautiful bouquet in her hands.

The two of them looked incredibly happy.

Their smiles were brighter than any smile he had ever seen from her.

The caption underneath read:

Picked myself up a wife.

He finally raised his finger and zoomed in on the pictures.

In the first photo, the two of them were holding each other tightly.

In the second, Ethan’s hand rested around Nora’s waist.

Their closeness was obvious.

She really was smiling in those photos.

Her eyes curved with genuine happiness.

It was a version of Nora he had never once seen with him.
