“I overslept. I didn’t make it off the train in time.”

There was a pause.

Then his voice turned slightly impatient.

“Then just take the train back. It’s not like it’s far. I’ll be here waiting.”

Hearing those words, “it’s not like it’s far,” I suddenly laughed.

He wasn’t wrong.

It wasn’t far.

The destination was only three stops away from the final station.

Forty minutes.

But in those three years, he had never once made the effort to come toward me.

“No,” I said. “Just go enjoy yourself.”

The other end of the line went quiet for two seconds.

Then he laughed.

Not because he found it funny.

It was the kind of laugh someone gave when they thought you were being unreasonable.

“Nora, what’s wrong with you?”

“You were the one who insisted on this Destination Wedding. I canceled all my meetings and came with you. And now you’re telling me to go around by myself?”

I stayed silent.

“Even if you ride all the way to the final station, it’s only three stops back. Forty minutes. Why is it such a big deal for you to come back yourself? Do you really need me to go pick you up? I’ve been waiting here forever.”

“Was it really something I insisted on?” I interrupted.

“What else would it be?” he said. “When I suggested we just have a wedding, you were the one who said no. You were the one who wanted to travel instead.”

“Okay, Let’s say you’re right. Let’s say I got what I wanted. What about now? I’m the one waiting here, and you’re the one giving me attitude?”

His words—“you got what you wanted”—pulled me back to the reason we had chosen a Destination Wedding in the first place.

Six months ago, we had been happily planning our wedding.

Adrian had brought home a stack of materials from different Wedding Planning Companies and laid them all out on the table for me to choose from.

I picked one with a simple, elegant style.

The main color was the dusty rose shade I loved.

Then I personally chose my Wedding Dress design, had my measurements taken, and waited for the finished gown to arrive.

He smiled and told me to leave everything to him, that all I had to do was wait and become his bride.

So I waited.

Until one week before the wedding.

I went into the study looking for a charger and saw that his computer was still on.

A WhatsApp chat window was open on the screen.

I knew that profile picture.

It belonged to the girl who lived across the hall.

Grace.

Later, I found out that she and Adrian had been high school classmates.

When they were still young, they had dated for two months before their parents forced them apart.

I knew I shouldn’t have looked.

But the word “wedding” made me stop for one more second.

And then I saw the pictures in their chat.

Wedding Design Mockups.

Color palettes.

Wedding Dress designs.

The proposal Grace sent looked professional.

Like she had done her homework for months.

The main color was champagne gold.

“Do you remember?” she wrote.

“Back then, we used to lie on our desks and draw what our future wedding would look like on scrap paper. The color we always painted was this gold.”

“The whole venue is going to look so classy. What do you think?”

He replied almost immediately.

“Yeah, I remember.”

“You said you loved gold back then.”

She sent a smiling emoji, then followed it with several Wedding Dress pictures.

“These styles are all trending this year.”

“They’re much better suited for the bride than the ones she picked herself.”

“Maybe you should ask her to choose again?”

“You choose for her.”

“I trust your judgment.”

“Then I’ll handle everything for you, okay?”

“I even picked out your groom’s suit without asking.”

“You’re going to look ridiculously good in it.”
