Isabel finally couldn’t hold back. She stepped in front of me.

“Sis, you keep saying I can’t save Dante. Then let’s make a bet.”

“If I can get Dante safely through his twenty-fifth birthday, you’ll admit in front of everyone that you were wrong and leave New York.”

I stopped walking.

“Fine.”

“Then we’ll see who saves their man: you with Dante, or me with Marco Romano.”

After the wedding, many of the guests lingered at the hotel.

Everyone wanted to see with their own eyes if the generations-old Romano family curse was real.

As midnight approached, I was straddling Marco when Isabel sent me a voice message.

I tapped it open and heard her smug voice.

“Sis, Mom and Dad just said it themselves. They don’t have a daughter named Meredith anymore. Everything they have will be mine.”

“Dante also promised me that once he’s in charge of the Romano family, he’ll make sure you and Marco die horribly.”

“Even if you save him tonight, your future is grim. You’d better go pick out a gravesite. Haha.”
