He Chose His Son Over His Mafia Queen Chapter 04

He held a pale Marco in his arms.

The boy’s leg was drenched in crimson, shredded and raw.

Out of his mind with worry, Matteo didn’t even notice what I was doing.

“Marco got hurt during the school event,” he barked. “Go grab the first-aid kit and call the family doctor!”

Marco curled up in his chest.

Sobbing, he reached his hand toward the woman sneaking in behind them.

“I don’t want her! I want my Mommy! I only want my Mommy…”

Outside the door, Sofia looked up anxiously.

“Matteo, please let me in. Just let me see him, just one look at my baby!”

Matteo frowned deeply.

Six years ago, he had thrown Sofia out of here in a fit of rage, banning her from ever coming near the Ferraro family again.

But today, for the sake of his son, he capitulated.

“Come in,” he murmured.

A flash of dark triumph crossed Sofia’s face.

She slipped on some shoe covers, awkwardly wringing her faded shirt.

Staring at her, Matteo asked softly, “Have you had a hard time these past few years, raising him all on your own?”

Sofia lowered her eyes, showing her most fragile, submissive profile.

“As long as our boy didn’t suffer, nothing else matters.”

Matteo didn’t snap out of his trance until the doctor arrived.

He stared blankly at Sofia’s retreating back as she followed the child, lost in thought.

Suddenly, I found it almost laughable.

“Can’t you see what her game is, Don Ferraro?”

Matteo was past his reckless youth; of course he could see through it.

Yet he only sighed. “She’s the boy’s mother. Keeping her from her injured son would be heartless.”

“Those little tricks of hers are understandable,” he added. “At least her heart is in the right place.”

He rubbed his forehead with a heavy sigh.

“Forget it, I don’t need to explain myself to you. You’ve never given birth. You have no idea what a real parental bond even feels like.”

Matteo always knew exactly how to twist a dull knife into my heart when he was displeased.

I lowered my gaze, my eyes stinging as I thought of my unborn child.

Perhaps it was a blessing that the baby never had to open its eyes to this world.

Matteo looked at me, a sudden tightness in his chest.

But just as he opened his mouth to speak, a high-pitched cry rang out.

“Where’s Papa? I want Papa! My leg hurts, I want Papa and Mommy to make it better!”

Matteo answered instantly, rushing back into the room.

The bedroom door was left wide open.

The three of them sat together by the bedside, looking like a perfect, happy family.

I clutched the small urn pendant resting against my chest, feeling a hollow void in my heart.

A sudden car horn from outside snapped me back to reality.

“Miss, your ride is here,” the driver called out.

I sniffled, pulling the SIM card out of my phone.

Then, I walked out without looking back once.

Inside the bedroom, Matteo stayed by Marco’s side until the boy drifted off to sleep.

Sinking into the armchair with exhaustion, a sudden wave of regret hit him.

His words earlier had been incredibly cruel. His wife had just lost a five-month-old fetus—a baby with tiny hands and feet, a baby she had desperately looked forward to.

“Matteo, where are you going?” Sofia asked.

“None of your business,” he snapped, getting to his feet and heading outside to find me.

He looked around the house, only to realize that half of the belongings were gone.

Instead, a clean set of divorce papers sat quietly on the coffee table.

Matteo didn’t even bother to open it.

Using a stunt like this to force him to send Marco away was laughable.

But the very next second, his phone vibrated violently.

“Hello, Freya?” he answered.

It wasn’t his wife, but a frantic call from the office.

“Don Ferraro, we have an emergency! The Moretti family has pulled all their funding! Don Moretti has withdrawn every single tech expert from our projects!”

Matteo froze on the spot.

His trembling fingers unlocked his phone, typing a quick text.

[Are you serious?]

A red exclamation mark stared back at him. Freya had blocked him completely.
