He Changed My Major And I Changed My Entire Life Chapter 09

“Sorry. I need to talk to her. You can take another fare.”

Sean pulled me out of the car by the wrist, gave the driver an apologetic nod, and left a couple of bills on the seat. The driver happily took them and drove off before I could even react.

I stared at him, wide-eyed. I was baffled where he’d picked up such pushy, overbearing tactics.

I frowned hard. “What else is there to say?”

“Joanie, let’s talk.” His voice cracked at the end, trembling in the cold air.

For a moment, I felt dazed. It reminded me of a long time ago, when I used to bite my lip and tug at his sleeve, begging for forgiveness.

“I’m really sorry. Just this once, okay? I’ll do what you say next time. I promise.”

Back then, my pleading voice faded into the evening wind just like this—met with silence.

I snapped out of it. In the end, I didn’t let his words hang in the air unanswered.

“There’s nothing to talk about. I already said everything I needed to say. You have your path, and I have mine.”

Sean hung his head, defeated, but wouldn’t leave.

“But I don’t want that.”

“Jo, I’ve done a lot of thinking. I owe you a real apology. I’m sorry.”

“Without you around, nothing feels right. I can’t focus on anything.”

“I’ve realized… you mean so much to me. So much.”

He took a deep breath, like he was gathering all the courage he had, and looked me in the eye. “Could you possibly give me a shot to make up for everything?”

“If you say yes, I’ll ring my mother straight away to help me apply for your university.. I still want to be by your side.”

The night wind was cold. He rushed his words and gasped for breath, his breath forming faint wispy mist amid the frigid night air.

I curled my fingers.

“It’s too late, Sean.”

“We’re both adults. We have to take responsibility for our own choices. You didn’t respect me back then, and now you’re not respecting yourself.”

“I shouldn’t be the reason you make such a big decision. Besides, we’re not even together anymore.”

If he had understood sooner, if he had taken even half a step toward me, we wouldn’t have ended up like this.

But spilled milk can’t be put back in the glass.

I had already moved on to a new chapter. He was stubbornly stuck in the past, trying to muscle his way into my new life

That wouldn’t end well. Not for me. Not for him either.

A sharp gust of night wind whipped by, reddening the corners of his eyes and leaving his throat rough and hoarse.

“Is there really no way we can start over?”

I stayed quiet, then nodded.

No one’s made of stone. Over those twelve years, I knew Sean cared about me.

But it was never enough.

It always came second to his pride, to his ego, to so many other meaningless things.

I always got pushed to the back burner behind his pride.

Even if he regretted it now, even if he apologized, even if he tried to make it right—none of it could undo the hurt.

So the best thing to do was to keep moving forward.

I patted his shoulder, trying to sound reassuring.

“Life moves on, it’s not the end of the road.”

I thought for a moment, then added, “You’ll meet plenty of other people. Eventually, I’ll just become someone you used to know.”

Sean’s face stayed hidden in the shadows.

He didn’t respond.

Finally, his voice broke. “Will I see you again?”

I looked up at the night sky, unsure. Would we ever see each other again?

I didn’t really know. I was going to be diving deeper into entomology, and I’d have even less free time.

Still, I answered calmly, “If fate winds up bringing us together down the line.”

With that, I gave a quick wave, turned around, and got into the next car I called.

This time, no one stopped me.

But as I passed by Sean’s silhouette, I thought I heard him whisper,

“…You’re lying.”

“You’ve always been irreplaceable to me.”

“Jo, wait for me.”

I froze for a second, then shivered as the cold wind hit me. Finally, I rolled up the window.

I’ll let the chips fall where they may for what’s ahead.
