He Changed My Major And I Changed My Entire Life Chapter 02

Surprise flashed in my mom’s eyes, then uncertainty. She hesitated. “What’s gonna become of Sean then?”

I swallowed hard. “He changed my major on the application.”

“To Elementary Education. I absolutely hate it.”

My mom’s face went through a series of emotions. She looked like she wanted to say something, then stopped. Finally, she sighed. “Maybe going abroad is for the best.”

“But you’ve known each other for twelve years. Mrs. Blair invited both our families for dinner tonight. You should at least say goodbye properly.”

I gave a half-hearted nod and turned to watch the scenery blur past the window.

Sean had never been good with words. Even as a kid, he always had a stern face and sharp tongue. The first time I met him, Mrs. Blair carried me over and introduced us with a laugh: “Sean, this is Jo. You have to take good care of her, okay?”

I blinked up at him. He snorted, pinched my cheek, and said, “She’s nothing but extra hassle. You’re just dumping chores onto me, Mom.”

“She’s so short. Not cute at all.”

My eyes welled up—but then words appeared in the air in front of me.

[Lol look at him, already so snarky even as a kid.]

[Total tough guy act but he was already gone for her.]

[Childhood sweethearts ftw. Grumpy boy + sunshine girl = perfect match]

It was the first time I ever saw the comments. I didn’t fully understand them, but the gist seemed to be that Sean didn’t actually hate me. I sniffled and looked up carefully—but all I caught was the back of his head and the tips of his ears turning pink.

Mrs. Blair flicked his forehead and smiled at me. “Don’t be scared, sweetie. Sean’s just grumpy on the outside. He actually likes you. Once you two play together, you’ll see.”

She took my hand and put it in his. He shifted a little but didn’t pull away. He just clicked his tongue and said, “Hurry up then. Where do you wanna wander off to? Stick close; I won’t comfort you if you take a tumble.”

So I tried to hold on. But he was so prickly and his words stung so much that I always ended up fighting back. The back-and-forth lasted for years.

When I was sixteen, I didn’t take his advice on which classes to pick. We fell into another falling-out and stopped speaking to each other. Walking home alone one day, I got cornered by some thugs in an alley. They closed in, grinning. I had a brick in my backpack and was ready to fight tooth and nail—but they pinned my wrists against the wall and started tearing at my shirt.

Just when I thought it was over, Sean came running in with a baseball bat.

When I woke up, I was in a hospital bed. He was sitting beside me, bandages wrapped around his head, blood still dripping from a gash on his arm. My voice cracked. “You…”

“Shut up,” he cut me off, not looking at me as he worked the bed’s crank. “Don’t get all mushy.”

“If you’d just walked home with me like I told you, none of this would’ve happened.”

I fell silent. The comments popped up again.

[Tough guy just saved her but can’t show he cares—peak tsundere!]

[He only followed you because he was worried, stupid!]

[[If only she’d lift her head; he’s practically burning holes into her with how worried he is.]

I lifted my head. But he immediately looked away, leaving only his scarred arms visible.

From that day on, I softened. I learned to ignore his harsh words and look for the softness underneath. Tiring sometimes, but sweet too. Falling in love felt natural. We fell into a quiet rhythm of trust.

Then Katherine Kingston transferred to our school. She and Sean hit it off right away. Soon she was taking up all his free time. And that was when I realized how flimsy what we’d built together truly was.
